Diwali

Happy Diwali everyone!
What are you doing tomorrow? Or today I think for some?

I celebrate Diwali to as a symbol of removing ignorance and realize that we are all light, and to welcome Lakshmi into our homes, to have a good and fortunate year ahead.

I have also heard that Lakshmi lit the path with light for Rama as he came back from the forest.

But some say that it is Lakshama, Sita and Rama who are coming back, and I just read an article that mentioned Krishna being worshiped on Diwali.

I'm a little confused, and it feels like I don't know as much as I should about Diwali.

Shubha Deepawali.

I will light a few oil lamps and candles to burn through the night. I will set up a little shrine with tiny murthis of Maa Saraswati, Maa Lakshmi and Sri Ganesha and have an all-night candle burning. I want to compile a small collection of prayers today asking for Their blessings to dispel darkness and ignorance for all. I don't ask for material blessings, as They will distribute them as They see fit, and I will be happy to receive whatever They offer. :)

I cannot attend Lakshmi Puja at temple tonight, one reason being that I am back at work today with my shoulder, and it will be too long a day to be out from 07:30 to 21:00 today, driving 60 miles round trip. Excuses, excuses! But there will be other Diwalis and Lakshmi Pujas. I am actually very happy to do the little sādhanā I mentioned before. I hope They are pleased.

Happy Diwali, to those who celebrate. Of all of our festivals, I think this is by the most well known, at least outside of our faith. But actually, I'm sort of saving temple time for another festival later this week - Skanda Shasti.

My boss asked me why I wasn't dressed for "DEE-wal-ee". I said I did contemplate wearing a dhoti (probably the ivory color with gold border, and a shimmery gold or maroon shirt) except that I wouldn't be able to wrap it on account of my arm. :( He said some of the women are dressed. I said "oh, sari". He said "why, what did you do?"  I said "no, no... are they wearing saris?" He said no, something else, which I surmise is salwar kameez. He tries my patience. :D

Blessed Diwali Friends.

Tonight I light many candles throughout my house, say some prayers and finish with a sit.

I made a couple of them with clay from the arts & crafts store. This clay was natural clay color too, red. It seems impervious to the oil when it's baked. They're really quite cute. Another thing to do that takes NO effort is to get the metal floating candle molds. They have a fluted shape that holds a cotton wick nicely.

I put on my dhoti, lit my lamps and incense, and said my regular prayers as well as those for Diwali I found.

Shubh Diwali !

It's my first Diwali so I'm going to try and make it meaningful.

Will create a playlist, light some candles, meditate, pray, chant and give prasad.

The only community I have is my lovely kirtan group on Friday, will be bringing my 2 year old..then it will feel like celebration.

I wait for these kirtan celebrations, they are like milk and honey for my soul.

Wishing you the most wonderful Diwali!

Happy Diwali to you too Maiia!

Kirtan is wonderful, glad you enjoy it so much and can bring your baby. We often have kids at our kirtans at my temple, and they are so cute when they walk around and dance to the music.

Vanakkam,

Sorry for being late, but happy Diwali to all of you !

It's heartwarming to see your experiences ^^ I hope to be able to celebrate properly in joy and bhakti one day. It's not easy being alone with temple far away

I hope great blessings for you and your families !

Thanks for your comments, Maya! Glad that kids are welcome provided that they don't cause too much distraction.
I'll be totally prepared..it's 2 hours, so hopefully she doesn't get bored..I'd be really sad since it's no exaggeration when I say this is the absolute highlight of my MONTH! I'm going to bring her "Illuminations of the Bhagavad Gita," book and her "The Butter Thief" book.

I'm also bringing her instruments (a drum and tamborine)..heh.

THAT'S how we're truly celebrating Diwali..

Much love and happiness to all on these special days!
