Do insects feel pain?

What nice people.
Were you being sarcastic? Unless you're against animal biomedical research, you have to recognize that some animals are going to get dissected and whatnot. The best that biologists can do is to make sure that they feel as little pain as possible.

My sister and I once had Japanese beetles when we were little, and we poured candle wax on them, and they walked through it, and then their movements became slower and slower, until they stopped all together, because the wax had hardened.

We were such strange children...
Honestly, I thought that only certain kinds of boys did cruel things like that.

Depends Upon My Mood..
I gave a frog mouth to mouth resusitation one time..

But Lilithu I wouldn't be so harsh on Hannnah..Lots of kids dotn realize or identify others hurt..bugs and even people..Its developemtal...You shouldnt lay a guilt trip on her like that..She's not all that strange..

Plus let me ask you this..If your house was infested with termites and they were litterally destroying it would you not nuke them? Or if roaches infested your kitchen would you not as well poison them?

Not sure that it really ingraciates me to you.

Are you talking about cicadas? I can't find anything on cicatas except that it might be a spelling mistake. Cicadas are nothing like locusts. Cicadas can spend up to 17 years underground before emerging in the summer to sing to their heart's content trying to find a mate. The noise that they cumulatively create is an incredible, but pleasing sound that fills the summer evenings. Their shells they discard once they leave the ground are often found part way up gum tree. Kids often hook these shells on their tops for decorating. Cicadas are beautiful creatures. It's a pity you treated them like that.

Yes. It was a spelling error. I meant they were like locusts in appearance. You didn't have to be a jerk about it.

And no, Hannah doesn't do things like that anymore.

Another time she drowned a spider, and then felt bad about it, and buried it and made it a tomb stone. Then later she learned that some spiders can hold their breath for a long time, and it was probably killed as a result of her burying it.

Beetles and other insects can feel pain, but they do not suffer because they lack the brain functions necessary to experience suffering on an emotional level.

I don't think killing roaches or termites that are in one's home is the same thing as pouring wax on a beetle that's not threatening you in any way. I really don't.

Why don't we just leave it with she doesn't do things like that anymore? Because you're certainly not going to convince me that it's wholesome kid fun.

Were you being sarcastic?

Nope. I thought it was quite a nice imagine of someone putting a bug to sleep because they don't want to cause it pain.

Honestly, I thought that only certain kinds of boys did cruel things like that.

I used to rip the legs and wings off of daddy longlegs and nail them to the work bench in the garage when I was very young... and I actually feel very guilty about it now.

Friend Phasmid,
Do insects feel pain?
Going by the theory of evolution humans came from animals and animals from insects. Huamns feel pain so do animals therefore insects too should be feeling it as they too try to protect themselves from adversaries.
Next, there was a scientist in India named Dr Jagdish Chandra Bose who in reality invented the radio before Marconi did BUT he never patented it and so was not credited however another research that he was working on and before he could give it final shape he expired. He found that plants too communicates and have feelings about happy / sad etc.
Going by that, surely all insects too will have feelings about pain.

Really? Like a dog looks like a cat eh?

They both look like bugs, and they both come in massive groups and are a nuisance.

I don't know about where you live, but during the summer when I turned 9, was when they all hatched and invaded in Illinois, and it was terrible. They were everywhere, and you'd go outside and you could find some that were just heads with a bit of their bodies left, only they were still alive, and they walked around with only half of their bodies intact.

Maybe you thought it was fun, but to a 9 year-old girl, cicada heads walking all over the drive-way and flying at you, when you are already afraid of bugs, is not at all pleasant. When I taped them to the trees, I felt they got what they deserved.
