Do Muslims meditate?

What do you mean by meditation ?

Because we recite a lot the Quran or we listen to it.
Also, a lot of invocations.

So, what do you mean ?

I mean sitting in silence, trying to look inwards.

I was in and out of this phase a couple of times before. I even managed to 'see' God in everything once from doing a few meditations/contemplations.It was a little bit surreal..Felt too close to the supernatural/God (still not sure whether it was God or something else..). The experience was just too unnerving..Sometimes I do feel a pull to do it again, but I guess I'm just not strong enough to keep the connection.

Anyone had similar experiences from meditating/contemplating?

Nope, I'm not..then again,it's only because I don't really care for labels.I guess anyone can open their heart's mind to God if they dare to.

I think they do. But they may not be aware that it is meditation. One could unknowingly meditate by by looking inward and shut out all thoughts. Meditation is not associated with any particular religion.

There are many Branches and sects in Islam that focuses on Spirituality heck even Suni, Salfi have people who do it. I think doing Dua is more a medation then prayer since you look back in your mind.

Usually when you meditate at 'no mind' level, you can feel that so close to God... I call it, touching an Angel, it feels really2 calm and satisfied. It depend, how great, calm and relax are you meditate... At Level Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), look who's coming at Hira' cave?, Israj and Mi'raj? how powerful he's meditate...

It would seem to me that dhikr (ḏikr) as practiced by some Sufis seems quite similar to the chanting of mantras used by some monks in the Far Eastern traditions.

Would that be a misunderstanding?

to clear all the thoughts(even those about god), and focus on whats inside us.
Not sure whether islam has different explanation for meditation.

Well, when we make a comtemplation it's more about the grace of God to us (for ex the good health, anything positive), or about the beauty and complexity of the universe but always because it was created by God. Like asking to ourself how He could have created this, why he created that, why this happened etc ...

If it's a kind of "checking" about ourself, i think anybody have to stop a moment and think about himself "were he goes, what good or bad he did" etc but in an Islamic perpective it's also to see if we are doing things that God agree.

But an other kind of meditation, non i don't think so. Not even the suffis, but maybe im wrong for the suffis.

[FONT=&quot]We always keep praying and asking, 'Please give me wisdom, please give me that,' then when God, Angels or something good wants to speak or give a message, they has no chance anymore because we all busy all time. We talk, we ask but we do not listen.... So meditation is the listening time, sit still, quiet and receive the message..
