Do we need God?

Ori

Well it's not like God has done much for us so far, so why do we feel like we need God?

Should we just say to hell with God?

Not much for us so far? what is much? giving us a world? life?

Well, I, personally, don't need a god. Life is better for me without him - and I feel I'm a more moral person without him. But some other's may "need" a god to provide them with morals to follow and give them meaning. I, myself, just happen to have better morals and a better meaning for my life (as I define for myself) without a god than with one. For others, it is different (as will be their morals and purpose of life as they define it).

I would say the need for God would be contigent upon one's explaintion or belief on the origin of life and ones parameters, if one believed in God on their God's relationship with man.

Need?...No
Want/desire...Yes

Vic, if you believe God is the creator of life than isn't your existance contingent on his s ablity/desire to create life and thus a need?

I both need and desire to know my God.

Honestly, on days like this...if it wasn't for God...I don't know what I'd do.

The contingency would be upon those things that he created, not necessarily Him. For example: He created water, so therefore I thirst. My need is water, not Him. It's indirect, not direct. There is tons of examples you can use for this.

Not to pick at your logic, but you are thirsty therefore you need water is correct. Water exists therefore you are thirsty is a non-sequitur because the cause and effect are reversed.

I wasn't intending my logic to fall as you noted but either way my point stands.

The divine presence only helps the general in the universe, it isn't neccesary, i guess, but his/her effect is great and the world would be chaos without him/her.

I didn't particularly need one, but I got one any way.

you certainly don't like yourself.
-God created you and you reject him: OK thats your ethics(or your good morals).
-but when you know he has the ability and power to end your life at any moment and you still reject him, then excuse me,you don't care about yourself because you chose a position face to face to a power you know you have no chance against.

Sounds like your at a cross road? Do we need God or should you forget about the whole issue? Well if I may ask, are you happy now (totally contend in all situations), or is there something you believe to be missing in your life? If so, that may be God that you need because I believe you would not be asking the question if the spirit of God/Jesus was living in you?:):) Though not perfect myself, I do speak the truth in love.

Our good friend standing_alone identifies as "agnostic, more atheist." I'm guessing, therefore, that arguments claiming God created her and has the power to end her life aren't going to carry a great deal of weight with our esteemed s_a.

It seems akin to me saying to you something along the lines of:
"Wow, you certainly don't like yourself. You completely neglect Zeus, but he has the power to stike you with a lightning bolt at any time. Excuse me, but you don't care about yourself because you chose a position face to face to a power that could electrically smite your butt whenever He wanted to."
