Do you drive a manual or an automatic? And either way, did you specifically opt for the type of gearbox, or was it simply unimportant to you?

In Europe everyone learns to drive manual. Automatic is easier and getting more popular, but the majority of our cars are manual.

My car is automatic, but I plan on getting a motorcycle soon, which is manual. I never particularly learned how to drive a stick shift.

But I can work pedal gears.

Both, the type of transmission in the car is largely unimportant to me though having a large number of gears is kinda cool. My Charger was an 8-gear automatic. The manual transmissions I've used have all been 5 gears.

Manual remains the default in most of Europe. One reason is the cars are smaller, with smaller (less fuel-hungry) engines. These have less torque and rely more on high revs to generate high power. The "lag" of a torque converter is very noticeable with such cars - and you lose fuel efficiency and/or performance. Automatics are less fun to drive, because engine response is more sluggish. My wife used to say that in France an automatic was considered to be "for little old ladies".

But my current car will be the last manual I drive, since the next one will be electric, rendering the whole gear change issue moot.

I haven't tried one of those yet, but since I always drive with my right hand on the shift knob, it would probably take me a while to get used to.
It would, especially as it would be on your left! :D

In the UK, you need your right hand for the Malhamdale wave. Failure to perform this action at the appropriate time is likely to result in road rage.

In Germany, most cars are manual and anyone who learns to drive exclusively on a vehicle with an automatic transmission is not allowed to drive a vehicle with a manual transmission and has this restriction written on their driver's license.

I had an automatic once. You can't start it by pushing the car and use the momentum to start. Towing it will destroy the transmission. When something goes wrong, it goes wrong badly and costly. I'm cured of automatics.

I can drive either, but my left knee being my bad knee has me strongly favoring automatics.
I am carless at the moment.

My partner's left leg gives her grief sometimes so I can see we'll be going over to an auto. Possibly a hybrid too while we're at it.
