People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People's heads are full of knowledge, facts and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool.

Here are just few of my favorite quotes from Chesterton:

"The act of defending any of the cardinal virtues has today all the exhilaration of a vice." - A Defense of Humilities, The Defendant, 1901

"There are those who hate Christianity and call their hatred an all-embracing love for all religions." - ILN, 1/13/06

"The riddles of God are more satisfying than the solutions of man." - Introduction to the Book of Job, 1907

"These are the days when the Christian is expected to praise every creed except his own." - ILN 8-11-28

"Let all the babies be born. Then let us drown those we do not like." - Babies and Distributism, GK's Weekly, 11/12/32

Fallacies do not cease to be fallacies because they become fashions." - ILN, 4/19/30

"To have a right to do a thing is not at all the same as to be right in doing it." - A Short History of England, Ch.10

“Man is always something worse or something better than an animal; and a mere argument from animal perfection never touches him at all. Thus, in sex no animal is either chivalrous or obscene. And thus no animal invented anything so bad as drunkeness - or so good as drink." - "Wine when it is red"All Things Considered."

"It is a disgraceful and dangerous thing to hear a Christian, presumably giving the meaning of Holy Scripture, talking nonsense on topics non-Christians know from reason and experience.

"If they find a Christian mistaken in a field which they themselves know well and hear him trying to support his foolish opinion from the Bible, how are they going to believe the Bible on the important matters of faith when they think the Bible is full of falsehoods on facts which they themselves have learnt from experience and the light of reason?

"Reckless and incompetent expounders of Holy Scripture bring untold trouble and sorrow on us all when they are caught in one of their mischievous false opinions and are taken to task by those who are not bound by the authority of the Bible.

For then, to defend their utterly foolish and obviously untrue statements, they will try to call upon Holy Scripture for proof and even recite from memory many passages which they think support their position, although they understand neither what they say nor the things about which they make assertion." ~Augustine

Sadly enough, however, I have a strong feeling that those who do "call upon Holy Scripture", understand fully well what they say and the things about "which they make assertion".

"Better to reign in hell than to serve in heaven." -- Satan, Paradise Lost

"God says do what you wish, but make the wrong choice and you will be tortured in hell for eternity. That's not free will. It's like a man telling his girlfriend, do what you wish, but if you choose to leave me, I will track you down and blow your brains out. When a man says this we call him a psychopath. When god does the same we call him loving and build churches in his honor." -- William C. Easttom II

"Half a bee, philosophically,
Must, ipso facto, half not be.
But half the bee has got to be
Vis a vis, its entity. D'you see?

But can a bee be said to be
Or not to be an entire bee
When half the bee is not a bee
Due to some ancient injury?"

-Monty Python

Liebe ist für alle da
The oldest & strongest emotion of mankind is fear.
H.P. Lovecraft

Nothing is more despicable than respect based on fear.
Albert Camus (1913-60)

Everyone believes very easily whatever they fear or desire.
Jean de La Fontaine (1621-95)

F.E.A.R.=False Evidence Appearing Real

Fear is not the natural state of civilized people.
Aung San Suu Kyi

That's good for now, I'll post more later.

These are great quotes from St Augustine when dealing with the heresies of his time in the early church. Thank God for sacred tradition and the Catholic Church that had the authority to give us the Gospels as Augustine would also say in his other letters!
