Do you know the meaning of your name?

For whatever reason I have a fascination with the meanings of names, technically I am fascinated with everything.... drives my wife nuts... lol

At church when I was around thirteen I learned that my name had a meaning, this was a new concept to me and I have been taken with this idea ever since.

I have often wondered if God influences our naming.

My name at birth was....... Roy, Edward, Long

Roy..... King
Edward. Wealthy guardian of the people.
Long ... "literally means" long

My name was changed at the age of ten by adoption to.

Edward........Wealthy guardian of the people
John...........Gods mercy
Ortman.......(Arbitrator /Judge) German meaning (of a beutiful place) Hebrew

I have gone through my whole family tree and researched the meaning of all the names..... quite fascinating....

This thread may not hold any interest for anyone else but if you find it interesting please post, I would enjoy seeing the meaning of your names or hearing any ideas you have on the subject.

Warning.... it could potentially be bad to place your names here on a forum, but I think posting the meanings should be safe enough.

Klaufi_Wodensson

Vinlandic Warrior
Caleb - Dog
Michael - Who is like God
Gordon - "spacious fort"

I don't really like my Hebrew names... At all. Which is why I always go by Klaufi Wodensson on any online website. I would go by Klaufi in the real world if it weren't for the fact that everyone already knows me as Caleb.

I love the name Caleb!

My first name means "of honor and victory," my middle name means "of grace, favor," and my family name means "weaver," which is pretty cool because I love to hand sew and knit.

My name (Christine) is the feminine for "Christian". I laugh about it because my mother was an agnostic when she named me. ;) My middle name means "light".

My great grandparents and grandparents meanings on my fathers side.

William................Strongwilled warrior
Sherman...............Clothcutter
Long....................Long

Stella...................Star
Mae.....................In the month of may
Osborn..................God bear

Roy......................King
Orville..................Golden city
Long....................Long

Jodi.....................God will increase
Ray.....................Advice/Decision protector
Eckles..................Church/Assembly

My name is:

(first name) - Gaelic = noble, calm
(middle name) - Gaelic = Scottish
(last name) - Spanish = beautiful

Actually, as a Filipino, I've been contemplating changing my name anyways to a more Hispanicised version of my name... I never liked my names growing up, since most of my family has had Spanish names until my generation.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
My first name means "dark or black." It's Greek.

My middle name means "consecrated to God." It's Hebrew.

My last name (maiden) means "breath of fresh air" and is German. I really like that.

My married last name means "from the pond."

Is everyone familiar with the patronymic genealogy in Genesis 5?

Adam =Man
Seth =Appointed
Enosh =mortal
Kenan =Sorrow
Mahalalel = Blessed God
Jared = Shall come down
Enoch = Teacher/ commencement
Methuselah = His death shall bring
Lamech = Despairing
Noah = To bring relief/comfort

I saw this a while back and had to check it out for myself, from what I can find these are the correct meanings of those names and this is the order of them in Genesis 5.

Any thoughts on this?... Coincidence, or does God give us message and meaning even in our names.

Quite a fascinating thought...
