I would like to do a poll at this time to see what percent of Americans actually respect their political opposites as fellow citizens, and value the differences. I would like to contrast this with the notion of not particularly liking 'those people'.

I don't have political rivals, outside of Trump supporters. I get along with everyone else politically even where I disagree policy wise.

1. I'm not a US citizen (but then I didn't answer the poll).
2. My respect for people has little to do with their party affiliation. The question is more if they can defend their decision in an intelligent way.

I can't lump an entire party, but I do not respect those who do not respect me, and I do not respect those who fight to strip me of my rights, liberties, and civil protections. They are citizens, but respect is not a one-way road.

This is a good question. Yes, I can say I do respect those who hold to more traditional conservative values and beliefs, while I myself have become more progressive in beliefs and values over the years.

What I cannot respect however, is outright lies and dishonesty. And that is true from those on the side of politics I lean towards, as it is towards those on the conservative side of things. I cannot say I respect disinformation. I cannot say I respect dishonesty. I cannot say I respect Donald Trump for all of those reasons. I also cannot say I respect manipulation to achieve one's political aspirations, such as voter suppression, denying rights to others for political power. I believe in fairness.

These are a basic human respect thing, not a political thing.

The only way one can have true dialogue with one's 'political opponents' is to first, perhaps, stop thinking of them as 'opponents' and start thinking of them as people who happen to have different opinions to you. In this respect, I'm not sure I have any political opponents.

I do respect them. I can fairly understand why folks might want a different system to the one I do, based on their life experiences, their education, their parents' views and whatnot. Refusing to acknowledge that the other side may have a point is one of the hallmarks of extremism and tends to lead to political silencing. Believing that someone has nothing good to say because they disagree with you on a handful of things and therefore refusing to respect them is absurd.

Some of my friends have different political affiliations to me; @Harel13 comes to mind, with his more right-wing economic views, but the last I checked we are capable of having intelligent and mature discussions with each other and he didn't stop respecting me because I believe in socialised healthcare. Nor did @Tumah suddenly cut all ties with either of us because we were for Trump.

I don't think people willingly parrot lies or misinformation. A lot of ordinary folks who talk politics do really believe in what they say. The quickest way to put someone on the defensive is by attacking their character because of the political beliefs they have.

Meaningful and diplomatic political discussion starts when you stop demonising your opposites and start seeing them as people.

Assuming "respect" means civility & equanimity...perhaps
willingness to befriend individuals, I voted yes.

Even those who want to take away my liberty, eg, socialists, commies,
fans of the draft, can have my "respect", as long as it's reciprocal.
We just disagree about issues.

Going by RF! Not at all. I was called a Trump supporter and I don't even care for the guy. Tolerance may be a better word.
Aye, there a some here who anger, rage, & hate too easily.
Some are even proud of it, & do it with purpose.
Mean people....I dislike & avoid them.

People who pray for my rights to be tossed out the window are often not pleasant or comfortable people for me to be around, and typically insult me in far more ways than one.

I'm not a US citizen either.

I have respect for anyone who I think is trying to make the country better, even if they approach the problem in different ways than I would.

Where I lose respect for political opponents is where they themselves show lack of respect for others. White supremacy, fascism, anti-LGBTQ views, anti-immigrant policies, misogyny, etc., are deal-breakers for me. Because of this, I don't really respect modern Republicans, no.

Don't care much about much about folks politics or religion. I like to discuss stuff but I don't really invest into any position. As long as people act decently towards each other.

There are times I don't respect those whose are in the party I have subscribed to... let alone rivals.

On the whole, I can respect certain decisions they make and then I don't respect other decisions.

As a person, I can give the respect due to the fact they are human and Jesus Christ died for them and therefore deserve the respect that Jesus gives to all.

I have close friends who are dems.

I respect people based on their status as human being until they either gain respect as more than that, or lose it due to their behavior.

I don't identify with either party. If people have views I don't agree with, fine, but just be open to honest conversation about those things you bring up to me. If people want to try and argue or talk over me or start spinning the truth, then I have no interest in taking the conversation further.

I don't consider myself aligning with any party that currently exists in the US. So for me, its just voting for who I can tolerate more, or writing in something silly to make myself feel better about the absurdity of it all.

Almost everyone has differing views than me. I'm used to it.

I dont mix political opinions with the person.

Thats why ad hon responses are once in a blue moon from my end.

If I had a choice, I'd rather have those few beers with Obama than Trump. :0]

A lot of my political rivals are great folks on a people level.

I have an issue when politics are mixed with religion. When someone thinks their political candidates are divinely chosen, It leads to a cult like devotion, and shuts down any possibility for meaningful dialogue.

It's not that I don't respect people like this, but I choose not to interact with them about politics.

For me, I'm glad for varying political views. I respect that other people are different than me, and I appreciate different ideas, even if I don’t choose to advocate those ideas.

I voted a conditional "yes". I simply cannot cut any slack for those who ignored Trump's utter depravity and his willingness to undermine our democracy.
