Does anyone here play Doom?

Man, do I love Doom. I'm talking about the original 1993 game, and it's pretty fun, especially when you play it online with other players.

I never played the original, only the 2016 remake. Man, was that a good game! Speaking of which, this thread makes me want to play it again. I'll probably be gone for the rest of the month on a Ultra-Nightmare difficulty run. Wish me luck.

Yeah, the recent remake is pretty good. The only problem I have is that the later levels tend to suffer from FPS drop and slow down on my aging computer, and due to the cryptocurrency mining craze good GPU cards are grossly overpriced and hard to find at the moment.

As for the original, I highly recommend trying it out. It's 5 dollars on Steam (Ultimate Doom on Steam), or you can download FreeDoom (Freedoom — Home). It's not exactly the original (the textures, sounds, and maps are different) but it's based on the same engine and source code. :)

Well, It turns out I'm not ready for Ultra-Nightmare. I thought I finished a fight, I turned around, and got my throat ripped out by an Imp. Sad!

The original Doom is great, I also like Hexen and Dark Forces (which use similar game engines). As a longtime Q3A/Quake Live player, the newer OpenGL ports are nice since I can set the controls almost exactly to what I'm used to (mouselook, etc).

I like the remake's arcade mode, but wish player movement was faster. And there is an annoying bug where sometimes either your or a monster falls through the map, forcing you to start over. And yes, it does need a decent GPU which are getting expensive as @Father Heathen mentioned.

Yeah, when I got my copies of Doom 1 & 2, and Heretic off of Steam they came with a ****ty and dated copy of Dosbox. Rather than use that, I opted to download ZDoom and run the .wad files off of that instead. Gotta have mouse look and WASD movement, which wasn't yet the norm during the early days of FPS games.

I've been playing a lot of Doom 2 with the Brutal Doom mod installed. :D

Nostalgia overdose! :D

I love Doom and Doom II. They were two of the first video games I played (and they made me too scared to sleep alone for years after), and the level design, monsters, and weapons are all quite amazing.

Whenever I used the BFG and turned monsters into bloody pieces of meat, I'd get excited and feel satisfied about doing so much damage with that weapon. :p

One of my all time favorites. I remember playing co-op with a buddy in high school via direct dial-up.

IDDQD. ;)

Oh man. The original Doom was banned in Australia since we had yet to have the R rating for games.
That said if you had a friend really into computers you could score a decent bootleg. Played it for hours as a youngster. Ahh such simpler times, when you did "banned game" deals on the playground.
Kind of a useless ban now I think of it, even back then.

Doom and Quake. God those were the days.

No hand holding, no arrows or icons showing where the baddies are, no health regenerate, just a mad search for that healthpack and weapons in hope that you don't get killed and have to restart the level.
