Does God or gods have to be benevolant?

They don't. The god of Christianity, for instance, has done a lot of no so benevolent things.

God can be seen as a reflection of the believer. If one is bitter and wrathful inside, it's possible their view of God--as the creator of their universe--is going to be as well.

The many indications to the contrary.
What is love?

Two people in an abusive relationship could maintain it for the entirety of their existence together. Is love then 'abuse''? (I say no.)

Yeah, I should have clarified. The "many indications to the contrary" was in regard to "God is love."

I hope I spelt that right.
But why do they always have to be?
Maybe they are kind of neutral.

if they were not, they would cease to be God...

here's one scripture -

Alma 42:25
25 What, do ye suppose that mercy can rob justice? I say unto you, Nay; not one whit. If so, God would cease to be God.

the whole chap 42 spells out the conditional nature of it. God walks a fine line...

God didn't create their universe. God transforms what eternally exists :)
Did God create out of nothing - by Jamie Turner - Helium

God is cleaning up a mess He did not make - and He refuses to take away agency.... we choose to let Him clean us up, or not - our will.

What is love?

Baby, don't hurt me.

Sorry. I couldn't resist.

I tend to think that, if such beings were to exist, any god that would be taking the slightest bit of interest in humans and their affairs would be enough like us to make relating to us (and vica versa) plausible. Meaning I would imagine them having flaws and neuroses just like we do and personalities ranging from more or less benevolent to downright nasty and self-serving.

I think it makes more sense for our gods to mirror our own personalities than to be "above" that kind of thing.

In my view, moreso than you can imagine. ;)
