Does she exist?

My girlfriend and I lived in an apartment nearby where we are at the moment. Usually, we would meet a neighbour on the way to the lift. He was a bit odd, awkward and had that sort of complainy and needy people pleasing(but fakey) attitude. Whenever we saw him, he would talk about his girlfriend a lot and how they are getting married and eventually how they got married. However, the whole time we were there, we never saw a ring on his finger or his girlfriend/fiance/wife. We sometimes met him(by himself) by accident while shopping, and we definitely tried to avoid him if we saw him first lol.

Does she exist?

Maybe he doesn't have a ring because they're expensive and serve no purpose other than a symbolic one? It's possible.
Possible, but unlikely. The flats were on the expensive side and he said he bought it with her. Do you think the information at hand is enough to warrant a conclusion?

It all depends on what you assume about others and what your own virtues are. Do you or do you not assume someone is a pathological liar with little cause to do so?

What's this got to do with virtues? I don't know why you mentioned pathological lair as though it had to be that. There could be many possible scenarios ;) Where's your open-mind mentality?

Maybe she lives in a foreign country ─ Moldava, the Philippines, &c &c ─ and the immigration people are still at work.

Or, as you imply, maybe he's just one more troubled being.

An invalid?

If it really matters, I guess you could dress up as a delivery man, knock on the door and say your instructions are that it must be signed for by the addressee?

I could. I don’t care really but this was more of a curiosity if theists would think she does exist based on testimony from someone you don’t know ;)

That there can be many possible scenarios is precisely why this is a matter of one's personal virtues. Based on the character you wish to cultivate, what assumptions are you comfortable making about others? Those assumptions should be a reflection or articulation of your values (aka, virtues).

In this example, the question of whether or not one generally take someone at their word is an important one, and the answer a reflection of one's virtues or code of honor. A
re you the sort who assumes folks are honest or are you the sort that assumes folks are liars? Other virtues you hold may come into play as well. Are you the sort that demands physical evidence, and if so when do you find it appropriate to do so? Are you the sort of person who doesn't find it wise to cause needless conflict? Or do you see it as your duty to point out other people's flaws whether it is to take them down a notch or to in your view, help them? All of these things - your virtues or values - impact how you interpret the scenario.

I'm not sure what you mean when you try to conflate virtues. The only virtues I know about are the ones Aristotle spoke about.

Lol are we knights living in the medieval era?

For someone who claims to be born with critical thinking skills, you certainly have presented limited options :p Can't one assume people are honest but leave open other scenarios? In other words, this person may or may not exist. However, if he wants some money, for whatever reason, say to help her girlfriend with surgery, or whatever, I'd probably need to meet her if I'd consider this proposition at all. Wouldn't you agree :) ? Btw, you seem to have left out the possibility of delusional thinking, therefore, he may be telling the truth.
