Donating your organs after death

On applying for my drivers license I was asked to state whether I'd donate my body for organ transplants or scientific study (being a cadaver I suppose). I said yes to both... though I don't like the idea of some student cutting me up and using my bits for hilarious jokes with his classmates.

With so many people needing my stuff out there, and me no longer needing my stuff, then it just makes sense to share.

I'm okay with donating whatever organs might be useful.

On our organ donor cards here, we have a little box to check off if you want to donate your entire body to be used for research or teaching at a unversity or medical institution. That I'm less comfortable with, though I'd be hard-pressed to come up with a valid, rational reason why.

Thats exactly me.

I would donote every organ to be used to transplant..But I feel extremely shy about beign a cadavor for people to just pull apart and learn on.

I cant explain it either because it shouldnt make a difference. It seems "humiliating" even though I would be dead.I guess I don't want people laughing at me or being disgusted with me even if I wouldnt know about it.

I was an organ donor and then I got freaked out when I heard people saying that doctors won't take extreme measures to try to save you if they know that you have organs that they could possible use to save someone's life. I realized shortly there after how little sense this made but I can't bring myself to check the option on the back of my license and to sign it. However, if I'm going to die and somebody can live because of me than, well, it seems like a good way to redeem any of the trouble I've caused.

I wonder how opinions about organ donations would change if science ever progresses to the point of being able to recussitate people in most circumstances. If we ever the develop the knowledge and technology that allowed us to "fix" dead people, I wonder whether we'd be less prepared to allow ourselves to be disassembled (I am a donor myself, whith no hesitation about it).

I am often suprised how squemish people are about this, I am especially suprised when it is an atheist

Do you have strong feelings about this one way or the other?

Are there any parts of your body you wouldn't want to donate?

Do you not want to donate at all, if so why?

Personally you can feed my scraps to the dogs if you want, when I'm done, I'm done.

good idea

sadly here in the good old you ess of wahey!

Medicine is in such a mess, if you have donate organs on your ID, supposedly this increases the likelihood they'll harvest your organs...instead of saving your life.

OMG!

Can it get more messed up than that?

Is it because they can save multiple lives instead of one? Why would they value one life over the other?

The hospital gets paid for the organs?

If my organs are donated NO ONE is going to "buy them".Thats the point "donated".

What the mutiple surgies doctors get more money to perform?

No, it's an urban legend. We certainly have health care issues in the U.S. but fortunately this legend isn't true.

Umm...I feel really strange talking about this, because it's not something I usually discuss with people, but...
I grew up with many people whose lives were saved because of organ donors. They were all amazing people, who did everything they could in their final years to make sure that the gift of extra time they were given didn't go to waste. They also did what they could to thank and respect the donors and their families.

One woman, Cynthia, had extra years with her husband and mother, and was also able to finally find and contact her daughter after many years.
There was a single father who was able to go home and care for his teenage son.
There was another woman named Jo, who had more time with her loving husband.
My mother was supposed to have died by the time I was a year old. A young man died in a car accident. Because of that man, I was able to have my mom in my life until I was fourteen. I will never, ever be able to express how grateful I am for that.

So...I just wanted to let you guys know that organ donation really does make a huge difference in people's lives. And seeing so many people in support of it on this thread truly touched me. Thank you.

depends on how i die,

if i die because my body failed me,
then go ahead strip it clean

but if i die by something my body was not able to prevent,
i want it to have a proper burial, it served me well during my life so it deserves respect even after i'm gone

or like this (i'm not sure its possible to cover a human being, but if they can get dna out of that its certainly worth the risk)
