Done saving Earth

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
As a person I don't really care to buy things I really don't need and also if something can be fixed then I'll do that rather than to buy something new.

So I have a refrigerator with a built-in freezer where the lid lock broke and so far I have just used a homemade solution which kind of works. But I decided to see what a new lid would cost and this is when I got pissed off :D

A new refrigerator of the type I need costs around 350$ and the lid alone if bought as a spare part costs 130$!! for a low-quality piece of freaking plastic!!

Why is it that we as normal people are constantly told to save on this and that to save the planet and then you have companies exploiting things like this, what is the freaking point of doing any of this when we live in a world where it makes more sense to just throw out things that are otherwise perfectly fine because a small plastic lock breaks?

It makes absolutely no sense if people are not encouraged to repair things rather than just throwing them out constantly whenever these crap products break?

Obviously, I am not going to buy either the lid or a new refrigerator, especially never a Whirlpool!! things like this just **** me off, why should anyone care if the big companies don't and just continue exploiting the fact that they can get away with doing this?

If that little lid costs 130$ the front door to the fridge itself must cost 1000$ and the whole thing combined is close to 3000$ if bought as spare parts.

It is extremely difficult to take these things seriously with the way things are being done in my opinion.
Of course planned obsolescence plays a major role.

The "worst" thing is that fish etc eat them and then they end up on our dinner plates with whatever chemicals are in them.
I'm not anthropocentric so I won't find myself agreeing with this sentiment, but just so you're aware microplastics are so pervasive in the environment now humans will now have them in the body regardless of what they eat or drink. Like other environmental pollutants, it's a compounding risk factor for other health ailments. Unlike other environmental pollutants, it's vastly eclipsed human ability to regulate and control anymore so all biodiversity on this planet more or less has to deal with these effects for many millions of years.

And that still comes with it's own socioeconomic problems. Not everyone can "afford" to buy the better made one, and are stuck with constantly buying degrading cheap crud.

It has always been thus.
But investigation & careful buying of
cheaper products yields better results.

I usually worked for companies making
expensive industrial & military products.
But at Black & Decker, there was no
planning for obsolescence. And one of
their cheapest products....the lowest
level circular saw was very durable.
This earned it praise.

While true, that actually makes the situation worse, not better. Large plastics can be (relatively) easily removed. Microplastics cannot and are now a source of background pollution that will escalate death and illness risks for all organisms on this planet.
I agree. Actually, I also did not know. But when I saw the pictures, I thought "why does not a set of large barges simply tasked to remove that stuff from the garbage patch?". Then I searched and realised that the actual facts are different...and far more troubling.

Our inconvenience is the least of it.
The Great Pacific Garbage patch. A new continent made out of plastic.

1.6 million square kilometers. The same size as Iran or Mongolia
What is interesting is, this was caused by the Democrats and their activists Environmentalists. They pushed for recycling of plastics while not taking into account the economics of supply and demand. After the US recycling industry was saturated with recycled plastics, this material was then sent overseas to be recycled. After that demand for recyclables became saturated, it was disposed of by dumbing into the ocean. The DNC owns this garbage. They say there are the champions of the environment, but are not very bright when it comes to applications. This is a hint of the result we would get is the DNC controlled climate change remediation; trash the world.

Had the DNC boneheads, simply left that alone and allowed to be called waste, at least all that debris would be buried under the ground and not polluting the ocean. The DNC has this knack for making new problems, when they try to solve old problems. The way I see it, the DNC now has to pick up its garbage and give it a proper burial? They made this predictable result happen.

I would have buried this plastic waste in special burial grounds until some entrepreneurs figure how to make money off it by recycling the resources in a cost effective way. Then they can have these raw materials for free. Someday it will be worth something.

As far as its garbage in the ocean, that the DNC now has to pick up, I would suggest blowing air onto the ocean floor to float it up and use skimmer ships to skim it as the rises to the surface. I made this suggest so you guys do not make this even worse with your solution.
