Driving Tips

Viker

Your beloved eccentric Auntie Cristal
One thing I notice in watching many videos
of accidents is that so many are easily avoided
by just.....
- Keep plenty of distance from vehicle ahead.
- Think several vehicles ahead.
- When you sense trouble, start slowing down immediately.
- Let jerks have their way.
It's dangerous to use your vehicle to enforce your right of way.
- In bad road conditions, slow down more than you think necessary.
(Because it still might be less than necessary.)

Get a dash cam because people lie.
Any other tips?
Get defensive, not reckless or aggressive. Think/drive like a mature motorcyclist.

I agree wih this 100%. No make that 110%.
Not sure how your roads are there.

We have a combination of cow roads and open highways I drive every day. I dread the open highways. I have a very fast car and it is tempting to play the same games they play. It isn't a recipe for peace. I like distractions because they take my mind off of the people behind the wheel and help me concentrate on only driving saftely. If it made their day to blow around be, I'm usually ok with that.

Sometimes though on a bad day I can be a little unpredictable which is really letting my emotions overide my logic.
We are all a work in progress.

Not everything is within reasonable walking distance, and many areas aren't easily accessable by foot. Also, public transit sucks if not completely nonexistent, especially in smaller cities or rural areas.
Yup. Indiana it was just a no for me. It wasn't there and I lived several miles from the nearest town.
Here, it's not the best, you'll probably be extremely early or late (retail amd food service get screwed from time to time having to stay longer than scheduled amd missing the last bus of the day) amd they're striking so we may not have it at all if the driver's don't get a needed raise and decent benefits.

- Keep plenty of distance from vehicle ahead.
True but sometimes such as during commute times on the freeway, "plenty" means cars will without warning dash into your lane and at other times you'll be tailgated by those who want to save 100 milliseconds if you tailgate the car ahead.
- Think several vehicles ahead.
And behind and to the sides
- When you sense trouble, start slowing down immediately.
Sometimes. At other times you need to immediately change lanes or speed up especially if someone behind you is driving 20mph or more faster than you are and might crash into you.
- Let jerks have their way.
Yes
It's dangerous to use your vehicle to enforce your right of way.
Yes

I had a high volume discussion with my husband one day, when he about got us all plowed into at an intersection.

He told me he had the right of way. I vehemently disagreed, and let him know that the Mack Truck always has the right of way.

anna.

colors your eyes with what's not there
I would like to know the IQ of these drivers.
I mean...I know these streets very well. If they had gone on foot, they would have arrived one hour earlier.
You need to be a genius to waste so much fuel on that. There is the subway too.

Besides, walking makes you lose weight.

Looks like normal traffic to me!

Many years ago I was in Boston for work. I was confronted by a traffic circle which was full and stayed full. I thought "heck, I've got a large, old rental car" and drove into the circle. Others made way for me.

Been there & done that.
The result is driving a little slower than traffic.
It works.

I have a trick that works quite often. If I need to change lanes and someone is determined not to let me, I pretend to challenge him at which point he speeds up to cut me off. I then slow down and move into the lane where he's created space for me. He thinks he's won but I'm the real winner since I tricked him

Too sophisticated for me.
