Due to the situation in the Muslim world

Spirit of Light

Be who ever you want
Due to the situation in the Muslim world (Afghanistan, Palestine and other muslim areas that experience fear and or terror, I have been thinking of being a bit less active on RF for some time (about religious topic and or about Islam/Sufism)

Already now i have experienced and seen enough online to realize that for me silence may be the best way to stay out of trouble from discussion.

I wish everyone to stay safe and hope that the situation we see in the world now will be soon under control.

Well it is up to you of course, but personally I think we need to hear more voices of moderation and reason from islam, so that we don't fall into thinking in lazy stereotypes. ;)

You can write about other things. There are thousands of other, interesting subjects to talk about.

May i ask advice?
Not sure I am the most articulate to give it but will do my best.

So it is a wish that i keep comenting on the situation as i understand it?
Absolutely, I for one value your opinion.

And that the way i understand Islam is a way people wish to hear more about?
Yes, if nothing else I can point to you and say that is not how all Muslims understand it, we discussed this earlier, I really will be chatting about you down the pub tonight, ok that's not great, it isn't world changing, but in some small part of Cornwall at least your religion is being presented in a better light than the Taliban scum offer.

This question is not just to @Justanatheist but to all who read it :)

I don't think anyone is in disagreement when it comes to terrorism. Fortunately, there are very few terrorists in the world, although they do cause a LOT of pain and suffering.

What I worry about more is the large collection of what I've heard referred to as "Islamists". The definition I use is that an "Islamist" is basically any Muslim who thinks theocracy is how countries or the world ought to be run. As I understand it from looking at large polls of Muslims from around the world, there are hundreds of millions of "Islamists".

I think that Islamism and theocracy are a real problem, and we all ought to debate and discuss these ideas. And of course the flip side is that that still leaves well over a BILLION Muslims who are not Islamists, phew!

Ask Allah to stop testing and do something for those who worship him.

The violent and repressive face of is!am is all to easy to see and hear about.
What is far less easy to find is reasoned and peacefull discussion.

At some point in the future Islamic nations must take a leading Roll in world affairs.
However that can not continue to be in the context of terrorism and militant Islam.

In these troubled times It needs more people speaking for reason and friendly integration not less. Civil rights, equality and religious freedom, are a necessary first step in any meaningful progress.

The world needs people of honor to speak up when it's called for. Of course, fact checking statements of fact is good. But also statements of opinion can also be good.

People with dark motivations seek to dominate the conversation and convince people that they're the only choice. A counter narrative showing a better choice is important.

I very rarely discuss religion anymore here, which is ironic. And mostly stick to social threads (and of course admin duties) My 'angry atheist' phase has been exhausted and mostly take a 'if it do no harm, do as you will' view. So the option to back off on conversations of topics that so frequently become unproductive is absolutely within your power.

But I do echo some of the other posters that the best way for people to understand that Muslims, like any 'out' group in tribal mentality, are just normal people living normal lives is to interact with them in a everyday way. So hopefully you feel comfortable with that. Though of course it is not your or anyone's responsibility to represent a group for bad faith actors just looking to stir the pot.

I feel like yours is a voice of reason, @Conscious thoughts. Your insight is a reminder to folks that people groups aren't monolithic entities that are to be easily addressed and dismissed as a whole.

If you feel the desire to weigh in and give your thoughts on a given matter, your input is always appreciated. You don't have any responsibility to do or say anything, though. We are all here at the behest of our own whims, after all, and you don't owe anyone a thing. :)

To all of you who answered in this thread :) Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Personally i have not seen my voice as important in the bigger picture, and a reason i thought of being more silent is because i truly dislike conflict. And the situation in the world today do have a posential to make conflict online too, due to different views especially on us muslims this days.

I do love this forum because i have something to learn every day here :)

I believe that the vast majority of voices from Islam are moderate and reasonable.

But there are many who choose not to listen.

That is the problem with so-called moderate Islam, assuming there is such a thing. When you need them, they disappear.
