Anyone have favourite song lyrics? Just a little phrase or verse? Something that you can relate to? Find funny? Touching? Clever? Just essentially something that conveys a message well.

I love this one from BareNaked Ladies' "If I Had a Million Dollars." (Note if one hasn't heard it before, Kraft dinner is Mac'and'cheese, and the bits in parentheses are sung in the background.)
I have a billion favorite lyrics, but this is the one that sprung to mind.

"If I had $1000000
(If I had $1000000)
I'd buy you a fur coat
(But not a real fur coat that's cruel)
And if I had $1000000
(If I had a $1000000)
I'd buy you an exotic pet
(Like a llama or an emu)
And if I had $1000000
(If I had a $1000000)
I'd buy you John Merrick's remains
(All them crazy elephant bones)
And If I had $1000000 I'd buy your love.

If I had a $1000000
We wouldn't have to walk to the store
If I had a $1000000
We'd take a limousine 'cause it costs more.
If I had a $1000000
We wouldn't have to eat Kraft Dinner
But we would eat Kraft Dinner
Of course we would, we'd just eat more
And buy really expensive ketchups with it
That's right, all the fanciest dijon ketchups
Mmmmmm...

If I had $1000000
(If I had $1000000)
I'd buy you a green dress
(But not a real green dress, that's cruel)
And if I had $1000000
(If I had $1000000)
I'd buy you some art
(A Picasso or a Garfunkel)
If I had $1000000
(If I had $1000000)
I'd buy you a monkey
(Haven't you always wanted a monkey?)

If I had $1000000
I'd buy your love"

Because, really, isn't love and wealth about being able to buy everyone
a monkey?

I love so many lyrics from the 60's, 70's, and 80's rock and roll - not to mention great poetry - where to begin?

Some of my favorite lines from Jimmy Buffett:
From the song "He Went to Paris":
An old man telling a young Jimmy Buffett about some of the tough breaks that life dealt him -
"Through eighty six years of perpetual motion,
If he liked you, he'd smile and he'd say -
Jimmy, some of it's magic, and some of it's tragic,
but I had a good life all the way!"

From the song "My American Friend":
A black man that Buffett had met at the airport, flying into Aruba for a weekend of gambling, is being run off the island -
"It was a pleasure, and a hell of an evening,
It truly was our night to win,
But the authorities insist on my leaving,
Take care, my American Friend."

One of my favorite lines from Elton John (actually written by Bernie Taupin):
From the song "Ticking":
A young man has just killed several people after his mind snapped (in a bar called the Kicking Mule). The cops have the bar surrounded and tell him to come out with his hands up - but as he does:
"He danced in death, like a marionette, on the vengeance of the law".

That last one is probably one of the most visually graphic lines I've ever read or heard. When I first heard the song, I closed my eyes, and I could actually visualize him being riddled with gunfire.

Thanks,

That is a very good line my friend.

Here is some snippets from a song I love:

"Hey Brother Christian with your high and mighty errand,
Your actions speak so loud, I can't hear a word you're saying"...

..."Hey moral soldier you've got righteous proclamation,
And precious tomes to fuel your pulpy conflagrations"...

..."And I want to conquer the world,
Give all the idiots a brand new religion,
Put an end to poverty, uncleanliness and toil,
Promote equality in all of my decisions
I want to conquer the world,
Expose the culprits and feed them to the children,
I'll do away with air pollution and then all save the whales,
We'll have peace on earth and global communion"

These are from I Want To Conquer The World by Bad Religion.

Sorrow by Bad Religion is awesome...

I have a soft spot for techno-love songs too... more recently:

I'm walking down an empty road, and I don't know,
where it's leading to,
my heart is beating faster and I'm searching,
for the truth,
gravity keeps pulling me and time is standing still,
golden rays are shining,
on you,

The sun is shining down on me, now i feel you,
the rain is falling over me, and i feel only you..
The sun is shining down on me (the sun is shining down on me)
now i feel you (now i feel you)
the rain is falling over me (the rain is falling over me)
and i feel only you.. (and i feel only you..)

(Down,Down,Down,Down,Down,Down,Down....)

spinning round i feel the heat, rising up,
deep inside of me,
look around and soon you'll feel the very air,
that i breathe,
your mind and soul is all around,
I sense you are so near,
now golden rays are shining
on me,

*Rinse Repeat*

A lot of things by Terry Pratchett and Bill Waterson...and I like this thing by EB White, dunno quite why.

"If the world were merely seductive,
that would be easy.
If it were merely challenging
that would be no problem.
But I arise in the morning,
torn between a desire to save the world
and to savour the world.
That makes it hard to plan the day."

Oh, and one of my favorite phrases: "When it comes to thinking, some people stop at nothing." :p So true...

Oh, and I have a special fondness for "Hotel California," too.

(she was living in a single room with three other individuals.
One of them was a male and the other two, well, the other two were females.
God only know what they were up to in there.
And furthermore susan, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to learn that all four of them
Habitually smoke marijuana cigarettes... reefers)

I smoke two joints in the morning.
I smoke two joints at night.
I smoke two joints in the afternoon, it makes me feel alright
I smoke two joints in time of peace, and two in time of war
I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints,
And then I smoke two more

Smoked cigarettes ’til the day she died
Toke a big spliff of some good sensimillia
Smoked cigarettes ’til the day she died
Toke a big spliff of some good sensamill...
Easy-e were ya ever caught slippin’? hell no!

Daddy he once told me son you be hard workin’ man
And momma she once told me son you do the best you can
But, then one day I met a man who came to me and said
Hard work good, and hard work fine but first take care of head

(guitar solo)

Whoa, rock me tonight,
Whoa-oh, jah sake,
Whoa-ohh

Standing -

One of my favorite lines comes from the Eagles -
"She was terminally pretty, and he was brutally handsome."

I always loved the sound of that - "brutally handsome". :)

From Tom Petty's "It Ain't Nothing To Me" -
"I got a dog on my leg
I’m walking on eggs
Missionaries walking backwards
Touch ’em and they bleed
Might mean somethin’ to you
It ain’t nothin’ to me."

As we come marching, marching in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing: "Bread and roses! Bread and roses!"

As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men,
For they are women's children, and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;
Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses!

As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing their ancient cry for bread.

Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew.
Yes, it is bread we fight for -- but we fight for roses, too!

As we come marching, marching, we bring the greater days.
The rising of the women means the rising of the race.
No more the drudge and idler -- ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life's glories: Bread and roses! Bread and roses!

The words embolded have had a great influence on my undersatnding of a part of women's struggles.

this is my favorite Bad Religion song:

Bad Religion: Atheist Peace

Maybe it’s too late for an intellectual debate,
but a residue of confusion remains.

Changing with the times,
and developmentally tortured minds
are the average citizen's sources of pain.

Tell me what we’re fighting for—
I don’t remember anymore,
only temporary reprieve

And the world might cease
if we fail to tame the beast
from the faith that you release
comes an atheist peace.

Atheist peace.

Poilitical forces rent
bitter cold winds of discontent
and the modern age emerged triumphantly.
But now it seems we've stalled
And it’s time to de-evolve
and relive the dark chapters of history

Tell me what we’re fighting for—
No progress ever came from war,
only a false sense of increase

and the world won’t wait
for the truth upon a plate
but we’re ready now to feast on an atheist peace.

Atheist peace

One of my favorites, as sung by Ray Charles:

Oh beautiful for heroes proved,
In liberating strife,
Who more than self, our country loved,
And mercy more than life,

America, America may God thy gold refine,
Til all success be nobleness
And every gain devined.

And you know when I was in school,
We used to sing it something like this, listen here:

Oh beautiful, for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple maountain majesties,
Above the fruited plain,

But now wait a minute, I'm talking about
America, sweet America
You know, God done shed his grace on thee,
He crowned thy good, yes he did, in brotherhood,
From sea to shining sea.

You know, I wish I had somebody to help me sing this
(America, America, God shed his grace on thee)
America, I love you America, you see,
My God he done shed his grace on thee,
And you oughta love him for it,
Cause he, he, he ,he crowned thy good,
He told me he would, with brotherhood,
(From sea to shining Sea).
Oh lord, oh lord, I thank you Lord
(Shining sea).

Ray Charles was a true American nugget. You take all of the politicians, televangelists, lawyers, and judges - I'll take Ray Charles. We'll have the better country.

Well, to be honest, Spinkles, I kinda envisioned Ray as the VP, or perhaps a cabinet post. I see a more sagacious, even tempered, less drug addicted person in the Big Chair - like me!

I'm always looking for a good VP candidate, Spinkles - would you be up to the challenge?

"I kept the faith and I kept voting,
not for the iron-fist, but for the helping-hand.
For theirs is a land with a wall around it,
and mine is a faith in my fellow man.
Theirs is a land of Hope and Glory
Mine is the green field and the factory floor.
Theirs is the skies all dark with bombers,
and mine is the peace we knew between the wars."

From 'Between The Wars' - Billy Bragg

Jaymes

The cake is a lie
One of the most effective songs I've heard is The Pretender by Jackson Browne. The whole song's good, but in particular I like:

I want to know what became of the changes we waited for love to bring.
Were they only the fitful dreams of some greater awakening?
I've been aware of the time going by… they say in the end, it's the wink of an eye.
And when the morning light comes streaming in, you'll get up and do it again.

...

Caught between the longing for love and the struggle for the legal tender.
Where the sirens sing, and the church bells ring, and the junk man pounds his fender.
Where the veterans dream of the fight, fast asleep at the traffic light,
And the children solemnly wait for the ice cream vendor.

...

I'm going to find myself a girl who can show me what laughter means.
And we'll fill in the missing colors in each other's paint-by-number dreams.

Those are my favorite from that song... but the whole song is really good. :D

Another song I like is Big Yellow Taxi by Counting Crows.

Hey, farmer, farmer, put away your DDT.
I don't care about spots on my apples, leave me to birds and bees, please.
Now don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone?
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

I like all sorts of political songs, too...
