This is my favorite song of ALL TIME. Then again, The Guess Who makes me go weak in the knees every time--American Woman is AMAZING!!

No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature
The Guess Who

Lonely feeling deep inside
Find a corner where I can hide
Silent footsteps crowding me
Sudden darkness, but I can see

No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to run with me

In the silence of her mind
Quiet movements, well, I can find
Grabbin' for me with her eyes
Now I've fallen from her skies

No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to run with me

[New Mother Nature]

Jocko says yes and I believe him
When we talk about the things I say
She hasn't got the faith or the guts to leave him
When they're standing in the other's way
You're driving back now to places you've been to
You wonder what you're gonna find
You know you've been gone but it won't be long
Before you leave 'em all far behind

'Cause it's the new mother nature taking over
It's the new splendid lady come to call
It's the new mother nature taking over
She's gettin' us all
She's gettin' us all

Jocko said no when I came back last time
It's lookin' like I lost a friend
No use fallin' cause the sky is fallin'
And I'm gettin' pretty near the end
A smoke-filled room in the corner basement
The situation must be right
A bag o' goodies and a bottle o' wine
We're gonna get it on right tonight

'Cause it's the new mother nature takin' over
It's the new splendid lady come to call
It's the new mother nature takin' over
She's gettin' us all
She's gettin' us all

[No Sugar Tonight and New Mother Nature together]

Lonely feelin'
Jocko says yes and I believe him
Deep inside
When we talk about the things I say
Find a corner
She hasn't got the faith or the guts to leave him
Where I can hide
When they're standin' in each other's way
Silent footsteps
You're drivin' back now to places you've been to
Crowdin' me
You're wonderin' what you're gonna find
Sudden darkness
You know you've been wrong and it won't be long
But I can see
Before you leave 'em all far behind

'Cause it's the new mother nature takin' over
It's the new splendid lady come to call
It's the new mother nature takin' over
She's gettin' us all
She's gettin' us all

Another song I like is Big Yellow Taxi by Counting Crows.

Hey, farmer, farmer, put away your DDT.
I don't care about spots on my apples, leave me to birds and bees, please.
Now don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone?
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

I like all sorts of political songs, too...
Jensa - I also like Jackson Browne's "The Pretender", but I think "Doctor My Eyes" is even better (lyrically). On another note - the song "Big Yellow Taxi" was written and first recorded by Joni Mitchell, who did a much better job on it than Counting Crows. Of course, I'm older, so I'm more than a little biased, but if you've never heard Mitchell's version - you'll almost certainly love it.

Thanks,

Ceridwen - I'd have to make you the Secretary of Education - unless you didn't really want the job. Either way, you'd definitely have a voice in my cabinet.

By the way - if you like Burton Cummings' voice (and I know that you do), you ought to check out a song he cut in his solo career called "Stand Tall" - it really shows off his voice.

Thanks,

Whoops, sorry... had no idea Joni Mitchell wrote it. I'll have to see if I can get ahold of it somewhere. :woohoo:

And I haven't heard any other songs by Jackson Browne... the only reason I heard The Pretender was because my Economics teacher got us to listen to it. (He always has some of the neatest songs!)

My list of 'CDs to get' just gets longer and longer...

I love the lyrics from The Rose:

Some say love it is a river
that drowns the tender reed
Some say love it is a razor
that leaves your soul to bleed

Some say love it is a hunger
an endless aching need
I say love it is a flower
and you it's only seed

It's the heart afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of wakingthat never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
who cannot seem to give
and the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live.

When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been too long
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed
that with the sun's love
in the spring
becomes the rose.

I also like this Robert Frost Poem:

Robert Frost (1874–1963). Mountain Interval. 1920.
1. The Road Not Taken

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler,
long I stood And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally layIn
leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood,
and I—I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Before Baby Bottles and Braces it was Bong hits and Budwieser

Long Haired Country Boy Charley Daniels Band

People say I'm no-good,
And crazy as a loon.
I get stoned in the morning,
I get drunk in the afternoon.
Kinda like my old blue tick hound,
I like to lay around in the shade,
An', I ain't got no money,
But I damn sure got it made.

'Cos I ain't askin' nobody for nothin',
If I can't get it on my own.
If you don't like the way I'm livin',
You just leave this long-haired country boy alone.

Preacher man talkin' on the TV,
He's a-puttin' down the rock 'n' roll.
He wants me to send a donation,'Cos he's worried about my soul.
He said: "Jesus walked on the water,"And I know that is true,
But sometimes I think that preacher man,
Would like to do a little walkin', too.

But I ain't askin' nobody for nothin',
If I can't get it on my own.
You don't like the way I'm livin',
You just leave this long-haired country boy alone.

Instrumental Break.

A poor girl wants to marry, And a rich girl wants to flirt.
A rich man goes to college,And a poor man goes to work.
A drunkard wants another drink of wine,And a politician wants a vote.
I don't want much of nothin' at all,But I will take another toke.

'Cos I ain't askin' nobody for nothin',If I can't get it on my own.
If you don't like the way I'm livin',
You just leave this long-haired country boy alone.

Lightkeeper - I can't believe it, because I contemplated posting "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost earlier in the thread. Great poem. In regards to "The Rose", I don't know why, but the lyrics to that song always remind me of the Irish classic - "Danny Boy".

Dadball - I'll take Charlie Daniels any day. I also love "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" - my kids (9 and 12) know the words by heart.

First time I heard this song was at the Argyle/Cowl games in Dunoon Scotland. It brought tears to eyes and we closed quite a few pubs singing this song.

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

And if you come, when all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.

And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be
If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me
I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

And Danny Boy reminds me of this beauty By Robert Frost:
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep

This song always just hits me..hard.

Beyond Hurt-Beyond Help by The Germs.

Heart can't feel the wine
Blessed kid's got no time
Feel the water running
Through these veins of mine.

I saw the future sinking
When I stepped outside
I saw the highway running
In a long and waiting line.

No caring where there's care for
No seeing what I've sought
I'm singing through the ashes
Of the ruins for which I fought.

I'm speeding through this tortured land
But all in all I'm fine
I'm reading through the torn pages
Of my L.A. Times

Beyond hurt-beyond help
Beyond here-there's no one else....no one else.

Speaking about Joni, there is a song (actually the whole album achieves a whole new level of spirituality) that I am quite fond of.
Joni Mitchell DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER lyrics

I'm Don Juan's reckless daughter
I came out two days on your tail
Those two bald-headed days in November
Before the first snowflakes sail
Out on the vast and subtle plains of mystery
A split tongue spirit talks
Noble as a nickel chief
Striking up an old juke box
And he says:
"Snakes along the railroad tracks."
He says, "Eagles in jet trails ..."
He says, "Coils around feathers and talons on scales ...
Gravel under the belly plates ..."
He says, "Wind in the Wings ..."
He says, "Big bird dragging its tail in the dust ...
Snake kite flying on a string."

I come from open prairie
Given some wisdom and a lot of jive!
Last night the ghosts of my old ideas
Reran on channel five
And it howled so spooky for its eagle soul
I nearly broke down and cried
But the split tongue spirit laughed at me
He says, "Your serpent cannot be denied."
Our serpents love the whisky bars
They love the romance of the crime
But didn't I see a neon sign
Fester on your hotel blind
And a country road come off the wall
And swoop down at the crowd at the bar
And put me at the top of your danger list
Just for being so much like you are!

You're a coward against the altitude--
You're a coward against the flesh--
Coward--caught between yes and no
Reckless this time on the line for yes, yes, yes!
Reckless brazen in the play
Of your changing traffic lights
Coward--slinking down the hall
to another restless night
As we center behind the eight ball
As we rock between the sheets
As we siphon the colored language
Off the farms and the streets
Here in Good-Old-God-Save-America
the home of the brave and the free
We are all hopelessly oppressed cowards
Of some duality
Of restless multiplicity
(Oh say can you see)

Restless for streets and honky tonks
Restless for home and routine
Restless for country-safety-and her
Restless for the likes of reckless me
Restless sweeps like fire and rain
Over virgin wilderness
It prowls like hookers and thieves
Through bolt locked tenements
Behind my bolt locked door
The eagle and the serpent are at war in me
The serpent fighting for blind desire
The eagle for clarity
What strange prizes these battles bring
These hectic joys-these weary blues
Puffed up and strutting when I think I win
Down and shaken when I think I lose
There are rivets up here in this eagle
There are box cars down there on your snake
And we are twins of spirit
No matter which route home we take
Or what we forsake
We're going to come up to the eyes of clarity
And we'll go down to the beads of guile
There is danger and education
In living out such a reckless life style
I touched you on the central plains
It was plane to train my twin
It was just plane shadow to train shadow
But to me it was skin to skin
The spirit talks in spectrums
He talks to mother earth to father sky
Self indulgence to self denial
Man to woman
Scales to feathers
You and I
Eagles in the sky
You and I
Snakes in the grass
You and I
Crawl and fly
You and I

My dad and I had this kind of relationship. I won't with my son.

Cats in the Cradle

A child arrived just the other day,
He came to the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.
He learned to walk while I was away.
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew,
He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad.
You know I'm gonna be like you."
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."

My son turned ten just the other day.
He said, "Thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play.
Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do." He said, "That's ok."
And he walked away, but his smile never dimmed,
Said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah.
You know I'm gonna be like him."

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."

Well, he came from college just the other day,
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile,
"What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys.
See you later. Can I have them please?"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
You know we'll have a good time then."

I've long since retired and my son's moved away.
I called him up just the other day.
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind."
He said, "I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time.
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kid's got the flu,
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad.
It's been sure nice talking to you."
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me,
He'd grown up just like me.
My boy was just like me.

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
You know we'll have a good time then."

Whenever i find my self a tad pompous (which is oft) and taking what I say too seriously, the words of the modern day prophets, Simon and Garfunkle come to mind...

"Dangling Conversation..."

And we speak of things that matter!
With words that must be said!
Can analysis be worthwhile?
Is the theatre really dead?
And how the room is softly faded.
I only kiss your shadow,
I cannot feel your hand,
You're a stranger now unto me.
Lost in the dangling conversation
And the superficial sighs
In the borders of our lives!

Modern era songs... Casting Crowns has a great song...

But if we are the body,
Why aren't His arms reaching?
Why aren't His hands healing?
Why aren't His words teaching?

Which speaks to my pet peave that most who claim to be Christian have lost that "servant mentality".

One of my all time favourites is Learning to Fly by Pink Floyd, but the mention of Danny Boy reminded me of the acapella group I used to go see all the time. They used to sing this at the end of every gig.

The Parting Glass

Oh all the money
That e'er I spent
I spent it in good company

And all the harm
That e'er I've done
Alas it was to none but me

And all I've done
For one dog whit
To memory now I can't recall

So fill to me the parting glass
Goodnight and joy be with you all

Oh all the comrades
That e'er I had
Are sorry for my going away

And all the sweethearts
That e'er I had
Would wish me one more day to stay

But since it falls
Unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not

I'll gently rise and I'll softly call
Goodnight and joy be with you all

For some reason it reminds me of funerals. The guy that sang the lead has the most beautiful bass voice and he always sounded so wistful...bought tears to my eyes every time.

Hey Voice, any room for the Watcher in the cabinet;) "You can't wait for inspiration, you have to go after it with a club" --Jack London
This is a pledge by the Zulu shaman Credo Mutwa.
"When kings are slain, and a pope is sent to hell,
when on a marble slab..a murdered princess lies,
a pale sacrifice to the beasts that rule the stars,
When out of the sky a stricken warplane falls,
trailing behind it long bridal veils of flame,
as missiles rage and red hot cannon roar...

When the battle tank briefly rules the blood drenched plains,
an iron tyrant on another's stolen throne...
and it's long cannon shatters the trembling skies with sound,

When nameless soldiers die friendless and unknown,
in Africa's valleys or Kosovo's snow-bound plains,
and whole tribes perish of hunger, disease and war...

When money is built into a jail to hold humankind
and love has died and compassion is unknown...
and lies become truth... and truth becomes a lie in a nameless city

When, in streets who have no love,
numberless children know hunger and abuse...
In countless homes where brute force rules supreme,

women have become blood-spattered slaves,
strangers to love, healing and respect,
strangers to the gentle and comforting word...

Whose guilty shoulders must bear
the heavy beam of crucifixion, all the ill we see?
Whose quivering back must bear the barbed scourge?

For all the evil and all the pain we have known
Weavers of lies, brewers of lies,
who can strike at people with weapons of the night

against which no armour and no shield can prevail.
The written word is their poison-coated sword,
the tinkeling coin their cull and crop of maize...

Murderers of nations, Africa's deadliest foes,
I curse your footsteps wherever you may go,
In whichever cave or dungheap you may hide,

I curse you all...may Heaven blast your eyes.
Tell Jabulon, the demon you call God,
Nomabhunu's son defies him to his face,

I swear by the stones on my mother's sacred grave,
that as from this moment, I will fight you to the end.
Against your kind, against your Masters too,

I will not cease to raise the Sword of Light.
For all you have done and all you have yet to do,
I will fight you to the ending of my days....."

How could I forget the Sound of Silence?

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence.

"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls."
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.
