Anyone who needs a decent shawarma sammich need only visit SE Michiganistan.
... or across the river in Ontario. We have a big Lebanese community and lots of good shawarma.

Unless Lebanese vs. Saudi shawarma is one of those food feuds like between southern US states over who has the best barbecue.

Saudi-knowledgeable people: is there a similar thing here? Is telling a Saudi that Lebanese shawarma is really good likely to cause a fight? :D

Shawurma is actually a food borrowed from the Levant countries (Syria, Lebanon and Jordon, and some Turks), as far as I know. It could be originated from only one of them too, not sure. Many places have Levant people prepare it, including Lebanese. But that does not make a difference now as it become a heavily borrowed dish. I've seen Yemenis and Indians with excellent skills preparing it too. We don't consider shawruma a Saudi food really. Saudi Arabia has become a hub of all Middle Eastern foods where you can find any dish you want and in quality rivaling that of the original country.

As for your question, that subject actually brings people together ending up with inviting each other to places they think are good :p

It's common here for Mid-East types often sell a "gyro", which I suspect is actually
shawarma relabeled to the more familiar (slightly different) Greek fare.
I'm no expert....I just eat the stuff.

Gyros are... different from a shawarma. Different meats (and they're ground and re-formed before roasting), different spices and toppings, different sauce...

And I hope my Middle Eastern friends won't be offended by this: I like gyros way more than shawarma.
