Of course there was. Most descendants identify, however, with being 'white American', while some recognize their Indian blood and heritage. Shame of conquest plays a large part in what they identify with. This is the case in New Mexico, where Mexican Americans proudly identify themselves as being Spanish, and completely suppress their Indian roots. In the case of the Mexican, who overthrew Spanish and French colonial rule, they proudly identify with being 'Mexicano' as a distinction to being 'Anglo' in spite of the fact that Spanish blood flows in their veins. But many Mexicanos hide their Indio heritage in shame. They are a conquered people. They even discriminate against the non-Mexican native Indios, thinking themselves racially 'superior'.
