Erdogan wants to hold elections early before economy crashes

I fully expect these to be rigged with Erdogan using the might of his burgeoning dictatorship to compromise the ballot. I'm glad Turkey wasn't able to join the EU but it should also be booted out of NATO.

A Brexit lie? What's that?
What he means, I think, is that Turkey felt entitled to join the EU, the EU was wary and issues several key demands and Erdogan essentially gave them the middle finger in return and carried on with his "reforms" pushing the possibility of Turkey joining the EU in the "fat chance" department.

NATO is more problematic. If booted out of NATO, Erdogan would instantly get courted by Russia to join their power block. It's problematic enough with Syria being a Russian ally, let alone having such a key geographical area under Russian influence too. So, in that area, we need Turkey and unfortunately Erdogan knows it.

Not quite.

British+Exit from the EU = Brexit

During the campaign, the media "informed" the British public that Turkey's membership of the EU was immanent and a population of 74.7 million people would suddenly have the right to live in the UK, claim benefits, nick our jobs, take our houses and build their mosques all over the place.

I know for a fact this tipped it for some of my friends who voted leave. They saw the headlines and thought enough is enough, we're out of here!

As I have access to German news media, I knew this was never on the cards. The uber-spat between the two nations runs deep and means that Germany would always veto membership. So much was obvious to anyone with access to European news, which 99.99% of all Brits are clueless about; hence the ease with which they swallowed that particular 'nugget'.

On topic: Erdogan is a despot and is quoted as saying that democracy is like a bus. Only useful until you get where you want to be. He is where he wants to be now, so the Turks won't get their democracy back anytime soon.

A very good post. Thanks. If you look at my post and dovetail it with yours, allowing that I hopped, skipped and jumped over the Brexit aspect, we are pretty much in agreement. Thanks for supplying the part I overlooked. :)

Ask Boris or Nigel
Explain to non-Brits what they might be, because I remember Turkey receiving billions of Euros in money from the EU with the goal of making them a member state. That things got frozen in 2017 is after Brexit vote.

Tautology.

In all seriousness, one of the arguments from the Leave campaign was that Turkey was going to join the EU which would have a number of dire consequences - and that we should get out before Turkey achieved membership.

@Srivijaya explains it better than I can.

I've not heard about this. Got a reliable link I could read?

Turkey never felt entitled to join the Eu. Like as if I had ever felt entitled to get an A on my physics exam when I know and the teacher knows that I just don't have it in me to even pass. Turkey knows the demands and is not that stupid that it imagined they would be more flexible to Turkey.

Oh, the EU wanted Turkey to join the EU, talks had taken place.
BUT not at any cost and Turkey had to meet certain criteria, IIRC things like Human Rights and Freedom of Press. Turkey was a long way from meeting those criteria and is a lot further away now, at the time of the Referendum they were heading in the wrong direction but the Brexit Press never said that and used it as another scare tactic.
Any money Turkey got I thought was to do with refugees.

I understand the viewpoint, but one only need to listen to Erdogan to feel a distinct sense of entitlement as he rebuffed their demands. He didn't feel a need to change anything in any meaningful way.

There was that thing that if they took the refugees with the money the talks about joining would continue. But again. Erdogan has not imagined it would lead anywhere. It's just another plot.

That's just talk. Don't judge a book by its cover. Erdogan is disgusting but he's not as big of a fool as some think. And he's already working with Putin.

I am fully aware the Erdogan is not a fool. That is what makes him incredibly dangerous if we kicked his butt out of NATO. What would be even more dangerous is if he withdrew Turkey from NATO.
