EU: It's not going well, let's limit free speech

This isn't terrifying or creepy at all. The EU is proposing to be able to censor speech in parliament and then edit it from the archives:

EU lawmakers, in unusual move, pull the plug on racist talk

"There, I fixed it!"
And those boobs (not the good kind) carp that Trump is a fascist.
Lousy Eurostanians....bunch'o mewling crybabies who want authoritarian laws to prevent anyone from experiencing the horror of being triggered. At least in the good ole USA we can have boorish politicians offending us with impunity.

I wonder what they are trying to obtain through this desperate attempt. Maybe they ignore that this attempt will probably accelerate the process of the self-annihilation of the EU

They do not like the way that Nigel Farage keeps showing them up!
It's entertaining to see members of European Parliament acting like kids, while Farage slap them in the face with the truth. According to these alleged lawmakers "The UK wants its total sovereignty and its borders back" is hate speech, evidently.

I can only see why this would be surprising to Americans. Free speech doesn't usually apply to racism or hate speech in Europe so I'm not sure why this wouldn't be true in Europe's parliament. The only people who should worry about this are people who want to be able to offer racist or xenophobic views without fear of challenge or retaliation. Honestly, MEPs like UKIP's Farage who spend what little time they do spend there saying how ****e the EU is are not being constructive, nor are they helping the EU to govern itself. The European Parliament has been known to experience Nazi outcries from time to time - I'm not really sure why not giving voices to people that just hate the EU irrationally is so objectionable.

Are US congressfolk free to say absolutley anything? There are no rules on disrepute or incitement?

I'd have liked it better if Nigel Farage had actually showed up to do his job as an MEP. He was almost never there.

He must have been playing by the rules or they would have kicked him out double quick.

At least he is honest enough to admit he has been milking it but how many others are doing the same or worse on the quiet?

LOL no he wasn't. Farage was outed by the EU Parliament who've since demanded back the money UKIP have taken from them (possibly illegally). The irony is UKIP literally wouldn't have survived if it weren't for EU monies being funnelled back to the party by their MEPs. If UKIP had any moral or ethical sense their MEPs would have taken only travel expenses and nothing else if they weren't willing to even represent their constituents.

Can't believe we're still shoving our money into this system and weakening our own laws and economy by compromise to integrate into it.

They are not in the same league as Nigel.

It shows how incompetent they are if that speech was from November 2012 and they still haven’t got back the money about which they are complaining.

That video backs up what I said. They are all pigs with their noses in the trough, which is why the UK is leaving.

Sincere question: who decides what's legit criticism and what's hate speech?

A Senator was cut from speaking because of an obscure rule that keeps a Senator from speaking badly about another Senator, despite the fact they were at a hearing for the nomination of the Senator into a cabinet position. The freedom of speech party, folks.

You're right - they're leagues above him because unlike Farage, the European Parliament actually does stuff.

Actually the claim for the monies was made more recently than that.

You claim they're pigs with noses in the trough but Farage and his cronies claimed expenses for doing literally nothing - and kept their bigoted party alive in the process. Why is it okay for UKIP to take money they didn't earn while claiming to be for the hard working man.

If Farage isn't a pig with his nose in the trough, why has he slunk away into the shadows before actually helping to achieve Brexit? The negotiations will undoubtedly be the hardest part and he's not doing a thing to help.

Censorship isn't a challenge.

It's a retaliation.

A well reasoned and substantiated rebuttal is a challenge. Censorship is both tyranny and cowardice.

Censorship is the only logical response to positions like Nazism and the far right because, since these positions are inherently unreasonable, they're not willing to tolerate reasoned argument. It's exactly the position you've stated which has resulted in America's inability to rid itself of systematic racism. Allow racism, xenophobia etc into the societal mainstream and people will begin to think it's an acceptable position with as much logic behind it as the counterpoints.
