Growing number in GOP back Pelosi on possible Taiwan trip

Now this is the unity this nation needs.

My favorite statement thus far is from Senator Ben Sasse....

Speaker Pelosi should go to Taiwan and President Biden should make it abundantly clear to Chairman Xi that there’s not a damn thing the Chinese Communist Party can do about it,” Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., said Monday

This is more than a trip. It's a statement that America isn't subservient to Communist China.

I think Mike Pompeo making an offer , should travel with Pelosi as a show of solidarity that we are still Americans in spite of internal differences in the end.

It has long been the case that a lot of the United States' undiplomatic posturing and chest-thumping instigation enjoy bipartisan support. In my opinion, that fact doesn't express desirable unity but rather another indication that the two-party system is a political and moral failure.

No this is a finger to a horrible country that we are not a nation to be bossed around.

Taiwan is an ally and an independent nation that cherishes freedom from horrible dictatorships like Communist China.

Generally, I don't view a "finger" to another global superpower as a particularly useful or prudent move. If anything, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has demonstrated that such gestures are more often than not pointless and do more harm than good.

Taiwan is an ally and a nation that cherishes freedom from dictatorships.

The U.S. is in no position to act as some international protector of freedom. History shows that the opposite has more often been the case--such as in Iran, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Still. Better or worse, I'm still going to protect my country. Verbal or otherwise should there be enough danger to warrant it.

I'm proud that there are still sensible democrats and Republicans who recognize this and am backing this up 100 %.

I'm an "Ultra-MAGA" Republican (Joe Biden's term but I'll embrace it) and though it pains me abominably to say it, I support Pelosi visiting Taiwan. I hope she does it and doesn't back down.

Taiwan is effectively an independent country. It has its own government, its own military, its own economy and its own ideals. Importantly, it has never in its history been part of the People's Republic of China. And its people don't want to be ruled by the communists now.

Beijing's argument seems to be that since they control most of China, (insert smoke and mirrors) they should somehow control all of China, even against the desires of the people involved.

I'm more comfortable thinking of two Chinas, in much the same way there are two Koreas today, and how there used to be two Germany's and two Vietnams. Just because one is bigger than the other isn't justification for conquest.

You know I agree with you that America shouldn't be an offensive country, but rather a defensive country like in the past. Generally.

This however, is a defensive move under threat by China. Don't forget that.

With an enemy? That's one of the very serious problems of this country is it can't unite unless there is a larger ideological enemy. How is that good to be united by hate? Sometimes it gets stupid (like dumping French wine out), sometimes it severely violates rights (Japanese internment and Red Scare). It's a terrible idea, and as we've seen when Americans don't have a larger enemy to hate they hate each other.

I don't want to derail this thread, but maybe someday you can explain to us how that is even remotely comparable with dharma, especially per the FNT and the EP?

This post is a one-and-out with your comment.

You think we should view opposite political parties as an enemy?

I would go for nemesis , but not an enemy.

Should?
No.
Do?
Yes.

Not aiming that at you, I'm talking more about the increasing degree to which party politics is 'us' vs 'them'.

It's a global phenomenon, but seems either worst...or to some extent led by...the US.

No. I'm saying were so used to having a larger enemy to hate that when we don't have one apparently we hate eachother.
Uniting in hate brings, affirms, sows and enforces hate.

The CHIPs Act would end our reliance on Tawain for semiconductors. A technological breakthrough with the development of sodium-ion batteries would end our reliance on China for lithium-ion batteries. Until the aforementioned measures are implemented, I disagree with U.S. officials visiting Taiwan jeopardizing favorable U.S.-China trade relations.

A new sodium-ion battery breakthrough means they may one day power EVs (electrek.co)

How dare Senator Ben Sassy egg om Nancy Pelosi to now go visit Taiwan!
