"God with us," (Immanuel) does not mean that "God-in-the-flesh" is with us. It means that God is on our side. Jesus was the Messiah, the one God sent so that all those having faith in the benefit of his life and death can attain everlasting life.
This is true. God spoke his word in Isaiah 42:1 saying:
- ‘Behold my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved on whom I will put my spirit. He shall succeed and bring justice to the nations’
Our God,
YHWH, ... our God, who is our
ONLY GOD (it is best to avoid saying ‘
One God’... say, ‘
Only God’!!)
S E N T many great men to speak His
Word to his nation (Israelites/Hebrews/Jews).
These men were mighty in His Word... like Abraham, Moses, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Joseph, David, Solomon, Ezekiel, Micah, Joel, Samson, Simeon, Daniel, ... you get the idea... and for this reason YHWH called them ‘GODS’.
Now you notice that I use the NAME of our only God (YHWH). And I say He is ‘
God’. But then I say that the Holy men who received and acted on YHWH’s word are ALSO ‘God’s!!
Are you amazed? Am I lying? Am I crazy?? A pagan???
No!! ‘God’ is a TITLE... let me say it again... THE WORD : “GOD”... IS A TITLE...!!!
Are you getting it yet?
A title has a MEANING... and can be applied to MANY PERSONS OR THINGS (many entities) AND MODIFIED ONLY:
- IF prefaced with a DEFINITE ARTICLE (‘The’) or
- an INDEFINITE ARTICLE (‘A’/‘An’), or
- if singular or plural, or
- if NAMED EXPLICITLY
Therefore we need to understand what the TITLE, “God”, means and whether it is used as defined above.
It is clear, therefore, that when YHWH called men of renown in his name, ‘Gods’, you can see that he means that they were:
- Mighty / Mighty One
- Majestic
- Powerful
- Encompassing
- Glorious
- Heroic
- Prodigious / Remarkable / Impressive
- (All of the above IN CONTEXT of the constraint of the flesh)
So YHWH was not calling them ‘Worshipful Deities’ as He is a ‘Worshipful Deity’, for He is Spirit and they were Flesh! Notice also that there were MANY SUCH MEN who were (8) in His Word therefore it is PLURAL ‘God persons’ (“Gods”).
So, BECAUSE we believe in ONLY ONE it has BECOME NORMALISED to refer to YHWH by His TITLE (“God”) alone - we need no other differentiation as there is ONLY ONE.
Think of a room full of ‘presidents’ of businesses and companies HEADED UP by the president of the USA (say!). If someone in the room wishes to speak to the USA president he need ONLY SAY, “President, ......” and EVERYONE knows whom he is referring to DESPITE there being MANY presidents (in their own context!!!!) in the room... We should expect so - but someone will always raise a claim of ‘not knowing WHICH President was being referred to’..
So wouldn’t it be better, just to resolve any confusion, to call the USA president by his name? Well, overuse of ‘Donald’ would make the GREAT PRESIDENT too familiar to the lesser presidents... too INFORMAL... and informality can lead to ABUSE.... which is EXACTLY why the Jews refrained from using the NAME OF THEIR / OUR ONLY GOD and devolved it to saying the TITLE, “God”, only!
Of course, by only using the TITLE over and over and over, the MEANING is LOST, and the TITLE becomes a NAME... and the NAME becomes THE PERSON... meaning that the WORD, “God” now becomes a PERSON and all confusion reigns whenever the word, and title, “God”, is used by anyone, anywhere.
Consider that trinity believers claim that ‘Jesus is God’ because “
God said to him ‘O God, your throne is an everlasting throne’ ” in some verse in scriptures.... Replace ‘God’ with the definition... “
YHWH said to him ‘O YHWH, your throne is an everlasting throne’ ”... yeah, silly, eh?
The trinity person would disagree by DIFFERENTIATING the first “God” from the “O God”... while still confusingly claiming that the two “
Gods” were the SAME
ONE GOD!!
But what if we DIFFERENTIATED by NAME and definition:
- “YHWH said to him ‘O Mighty one, your throne is an everlasting throne’ “
We can see clearly that there are two definite persons, one clearly greater than the other (other evidence attests this, e.g. YHWH says that He will establish the everlasting throne of the one whose throne is stated). And ALSO, we know that the words were spoken TO KING DAVID... and that it is the throne of King David (clearly a Spiritual throne) that is TO BE established everlastingly... certainly, YHWH is not calling King David, “DEITY” “God”... but that King David was a MIGHTY HERO MAJESTIC IS HIS GLORIOUSNESS in context of his fleshly constraints... as stated, YHWH in all pleasure said of him “I have found my David” (but we know that David let YHWH down by sinning by killing Uriah and taking his wife!!)
Sorry, I know this is a long explanation but I hope you see how the misuse of the word, and title, “God” has led to too much confusion in the Christian scriptures and belief in “
THE ONLY TRUE GOD” deity.
