I think it may be widely assumed that all mediums communicate with and interact with the dead in the same way, but we do not, and our mediumship abilities may differ as well (I explained mine here). I've learned over the years that mediums' methods of contacting and communicating with spirits differ. I have specific methods that are comfortable for me, and other mediums have specific methods that are comfortable for them. For instance, I personally prefer to give a reading in person rather than online or over the phone.

I've only seen the tv ones. I'm getting a J or M name could be a mother figure then claim it as a hit when someone says they had a Great Aunt Mary. If they pointed at the person and said your Great Aunt Mary is here then I might be impressed if I could rule out that they hadn't collected the info before hand.

I know some IRL. I'm known to be painfully honest but even I can't bring myself to tell them that they are delusional but try to inform them in a neutral way that I don't believe in magic.

Some mediums are only gifted with mental mediumship, which means that instead of a clear message or vision, spirits give them words, thoughts, images, and feelings that they must piece together like a puzzle (learn more about it here). I've heard it referred to as "psychic sign language." It’s like how photographs were once developed. The film is developed in a dark room, and as an image appears, you can get a sense of what it will be. That’s what I (and other mediums with mental mediumship) sometimes see when I receive a mental vision from a spirit. I'm watching hazy images develop, and I'm trying to figure out what they are. It's as if I'm looking through a heavy glass door, and while the outline of a person isn't entirely clear, it's clear that someone is standing on the other side.

Most of the time, however, I can sense the presence of a spirit before I see it. Sometimes I will see a spirit in a clear form, just as I see living people, but the spirit will be translucent, and it will be either a partial or full-body apparition. Other times I will see a spirit in a solid form, and the spirit will manifest and look like a living person, then vanish before my eyes or turn around and walk through a wall or a door. I've seen spirits like these over the years, and it has been in homes from the Civil War era, in Civil War museums, and on Civil War battlefields, which doesn't surprise me given the vast amounts of electromagnetic energy that these places possess. They are dressed in period clothing and have often been mistaken for reenactment actors or local residents who are into the history of the location. And while I've seen these spirits (also called full-body apparitions), most of the earthbound spirits I've seen are translucent.
