Suzanne
Leonard Cohen
Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by, you can spend the night forever
And you know that she's half-crazy but that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her that you have no love to give her
Then he gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer that you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her, and you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind
And Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching from his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain only drowning men could see him
He said all men will be sailors then until the sea shall free them
But he himself was broken, long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human, he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him, and you want to travel blind
And you think you maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with her mind

Now, Suzanne takes your hand and she leads you to the river
She's wearing rags and feathers from Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey on our lady of the harbor
And she shows you where to look among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed, there are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love and they wil lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds her mirror
And you want to travel with her, and you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind

People have wondered why Jesus appears in the middle of a love song supposedly written in remembrance of a girl called Suzzane. To me the song exemplifies faith and surrender -- Love beyond rationality. Like my love of Shiva.

What about you? Why do you think Cohen put Jesus in there?

He will be missed.

He explores many ideas, religion was just one of them. Maybe commercialism, maybe he was religiously inclined. Maybe, like many song writers he wrote what came onto his head.

It was one of my favourite songs once and I would often play it on guitar. I’m not depressed enough to listen to it these days.

Leonard Cohen was a Sabbath observing Jew but took a positive interest on other faiths too.

Cohen showed an interest in Jesus as a universal figure, saying, "I'm very fond of Jesus Christ. He may be the most beautiful guy who walked the face of this earth. Any guy who says 'Blessed are the poor. Blessed are the meek' has got to be a figure of unparalleled generosity and insight and madness ... A man who declared himself to stand among the thieves, the prostitutes and the homeless. His position cannot be comprehended. It is an inhuman generosity. A generosity that would overthrow the world if it was embraced because nothing would weather that compassion. I'm not trying to alter the Jewish view of Jesus Christ. But to me, in spite of what I know about the history of legal Christianity, the figure of the man has touched me."

One of my favorite songs by him, that entire album completely took me back when I first heard it. Now you've reminded me to listen to it again :D (and I have not thought of Cohen's music for quite a while....)

That song itself has a really strange melancholy that I cannot describe, it's very haunting.

Love is love, and God is God, in all its forms and all it's sources.

I, too, am a long time Leonard Cohen fan.
