Prima said:Oh maaaaaaan this is tough. I might have to go with the Greeks. Or the Ku****es.
Prima said:The Greeks had their priorities straight, and they lived well. They believed in eating well, but not overeating, in exercising, in making religion a part of daily, normal life. They accepted homosexuality, and loved making everyday things beautiful. They also believed very strongly in education and in intelligence.
The Ku****es were smart cookies. They had very modern trading ideas - they mined minerals and gold with amazing efficiency and knew what each could be used for. They had absolutely beautiful art, most of which was destroyed when the Christians came in. Also, they were strong - they took over Egypt. They don't get much credit from the U.S. as far as education goes - we never learn about them. They had advanced ideas about the role of women, also - the king's main advisor was often a woman, usually his wife.
Prima said:Oh, and I forgot to mention: the Ku****es are often referred to as the Cu****es, the Nubians, or the ancient Ethiopians.
anders said:My favourite nation used to be the Hittites. One of the reasons was of course that they are not very well known, but were one of the main powers of the world in ca. 2000 BCE. Another reason was that they have left so much in writing, which gives us a marvellous source for comparative Indo-European linguistics, and lots of facts useful in understanding the ancient Middle East.
Then I discovered the Indus Valley civilization. It flowered in ca. 2500-1700 BCE. We know of several well laid out cities, including a public sewage system, the likes of which is still wanting in many parts of the world. They built at least two-storey buildings, which included some kind of personal hygiene room, conneced to the sewage. Some lovely works of art have been found, and the most intriguing thing: they had some kind of writing. We can't read it, and dont even know the language, or even if those little clay seals are to be read or if they are just symbols for the seal owner.
You'll find an introduction at http://www.harappa.com/indus/indus1.html. There is of course also Wikipedia.
I agree...the Mongols...cause Genghis was a bada$$ mofo!!!meogi said:The Mongols.
The way they just seemed unstoppable back in the day... took over most all of Asia (minus Japan, silly Divine Wind) and good portion of Eastern Europe. They even scared Rome at the time... but they wern't just barbaric killers either, they promoted trade and foreign contact between all of Asia as well as religious tolerance. I really need to study more about them, if only I wern't so busy!

Druidus said:I like the Sarmathians/Sythians as well. They had, I think, the best ranged cavalry and ranged infantry during their existence, able to dominate the steppes.
