Favorite mantras?

I'm starting this thread to see what others' favorite mantras are.

I'm told that chanting Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha every morning has a great effect, but since I don't do it regularly, I don't really feel the full effects of the mantra, and they aren't lasting.

However, Hare Krishna always puts me in a good mood. Namah Sivaya is also wonderful.

So... what are some other favorites?

(2) Maha Mrityunjaya mantra

(3) Gayatri Mantra (full) during Sandhya Vandanam

Friend Riverwolf,

Could you highlight as to how mantra's work?
Before one takes up chanting!

Sorry for "butting in". Here is my understanding on the Mantras.

(1) There are some Mantras which can be chanted by all without any initiation and without any side effects.

(2) Some Mantras require special initiation, can be chanted by some only, during certain time of the day only, need to be chanted in a certain way only or it gives a harmful effect.

(3) Each Mantra has a specific "Bija", a specific "shakti", were created by a specific "rishi", a specific "Chhanda" and are directed to a specific "Deva".

(4) How Mantra works - chanted with its meaning and devotion to that form of God constantly in mind, it creates certain positive vibrations in your body/mind/soul and also around you.

Friend satsangi,

Thanks for your response.
This query was just for everyone's benefit only as had already covered the essence in another thread on chanting.

Unless a point is repeated like a mantra and vibration of it created it has no effect and specially in today's world where man is more scientific in approach an understanding of the basics is very very important.

Baiju Bawra brought about rainfall by his music like wise words too have vibrations but its effectiveness is only when one is *conscious*.

Satsangi does bring up a good point, that certain mantras shouldn't be chanted by just anyone.

So, here's another part: when you list your favorite ones, do make a note of whether or not it can be chanted by anyone at anytime.

The ones I listed can be chanted by anyone at any time, but I've read that Namah Sivaya works best for Saivite initiates, which I am not.

Aum Namah Shivaya can be chanted by anyone at any time. As a general rule, all the mantras pertaining to Parmatma (For Shaivites- Lord Shiva, for Vaisnavites- Lord Vishnu) can be chanted by anyone anytime if it is just done with devotion only or by sheer love only in a Nishkaam way. But Brahama Muhurta (early morning) is the best time and so are the transition times of the day(morning to afternoon, afternoon to evening, evening to night etc.)

The Mantras which are recited for a specific purpose or for attaining specific goals have all the rules and regulation which if not followed does not give desired results and can give bad effects too. Usually such Mantras need to be passed on by a Guru who has had that "Mantra Siddhi".

The "Bija" words are specific syallables which can potentiate a Mantra- some of the Bija are- aum, hrim, klim, ain, shreem, hom, jum etc.

One caution- do not self experiment with the Bija Mantras unless under the guidance of an experienced Guru who has had "Mantra Siddhi." Aum is the "universal bija" and that is okay.

A favorite mantra... that's like talking about a favorite color... it depends on where you use it. There are mantras to achieve so many different objectives... I'm particularly surprised with the Om Nama Shivaya and Mahamritunjaya mantras and their effect on my health. Also with the beneficial effects on my mind of Om Shri Ganeshaya Namaha . Om Shri Hanumate Namaha is good for self-esteem, devotion, respect, concentration... also felt a mild effect on my health. And since I ask Hanuman to protect me, when I cross a street, cars stop! They don't try to run over me anymore! LOL!

I also noticed Om Dum Durgaye namaha has brought peace to my home. Try this mantra when you're tired: Om Shrim Hrim Mahalakshmiye namaha. I've been also trying "Om Shrim Dhana Lakshmiye namaha" for wealth, but it doesn't seem to be working yet. So... I also repeat "Om Kshamasya Kshamasya Kshamasya" which relaxes me and makes me feel as a weight has been removed from my shoulders.

The Om Shanti Shanti Shanti makes my heart chakra vibrate. Interesting, because I didn't read anything about the Shanti activating the Anahata chakra yet.

The Harinama made me feel my goals are the same goals that Krishna wants for me to accomplish. That was great. Try the following Pranayama (with eyes closed) and you tell me:

Hare (while you breathe in)
Krishna (while you breathe out)
Hare (while you breathe in)
Krishna (while you breathe out)
Krishna (while you breathe in)
Krishna (while you breathe out)
Hare (while you breathe in)
Hare (while you breathe out)
Hare (while you breathe in)
Rama (while you breathe out)
Hare (while you breathe in)
Rama (while you breathe out)
Rama (while you breathe in)
Rama (while you breathe out)
Hare (while you breathe in)
Hare (while you breathe out)

:)

Well Radhakrishnaji, I'm glad you liked it. That idea of doing pranayama with the Harinama came to me one night while I was trying the famous SO HAM pranayama. Some thought voice, I think the Paramatma, told me "that's Advaita, you're a Vaishnava, better try with the Harinama mantra". And I noticed the Harinama is perfect for pranayama, because it has an even number of words.

Anyway, I'm sure I'm not the first one that uses the Harinama for pranayama... :D I'm sure someone tried "my" idea thousands of years ago already.

I always do that pranayama now before meditation; it helps me a lot to enter in the "everything is OK" mood and silence my mind.

BTW, when you ask Hanuman to help you manifest the self-worth and bravery of your own atma, tell him to do it in a good way. Otherwise I had the experience that people looked at me scared, like "OMG I'll better treat this guy well, otherwise he's gonna kill me" LOL! Curiously, I asked the same to archangel Michael before and I had the same experience. It's good to ask for some things to come "in a good/nice way". Maybe it's also a matter of balance.

Pleas tell me; is the bija mantra of Hanuman HAM or HUM? Ham with the "a" of harmony or Hum as in "hoom"? So far I used "Shri" instead of the bija. Thank you ;).

Friend agorman,

Glad to note that you have been able to still the mind with mantras.
However let us keep in mind even THAT [mantras used] are also ATTACHMENTS; which too have to be dropped.

Zenzero I think we will always be "attached" to something; I think freedom is being able to choose to what do you want to become attached to and for how long...

Friend agorman,

I think freedom is being able to choose to what do you want to become attached to and for how long...

The choice is to both to use the mind to think as well as *still* the thoughts.
Nirvana is when no more thoughts remain.

Friend itwillend,

*death* - there is nothing as death But yes the one who achieves nirvana or samadhi does not need to take another human birth / life unless it so wishes.
