One of my favorite paintings is entitled "Sadak in Search of the Waters of Oblivion", by John Martin:

Though based on a story, the image is largely open to viewer interpretation as it depicts a simple, but dramatic representation of mankind's desire and ability to overcome huge obstacles.
The painting is impressive to see in person, and shows a man in a desperate attempt to reach his goal. He's almost there, but not quite. Simply lowering a hand into the waters would represent every possible limitation overcome.
