I am not sure what enlightenment is beyond understanding what we are, however that is sometimes not easy. I think some are more enlightened than others, and there appears to be a practical limit for each individual to understanding ourselves. My answer reminds me of a Larson cartoon in which dogs are doing research to understand 'The doorknob principle'. Quote: "Knowing how it could change the lives of dogs everywhere dog scientists struggled diligently to understand the doorknob principle." Its one of my favorites from Larson. As stupid as a dog is, its not the most stupid mammal. What is difficult for a dog to contemplate is impossible for a goat.

“Before one studies Zen, mountains are mountains and waters are waters; after a first glimpse into the truth of Zen, mountains are no longer mountains and waters are no longer waters; after enlightenment, mountains are once again mountains and waters once again waters.”

Just looked these up but this is my take on enlightenment.

The real meaning of enlightenment is to gaze with undimmed eyes on all the darkness. - Nikos Kazantzakis
Not creating delusions is enlightenment. - Bodhidharma
Ultimately you have to work for your own enlightenment. - Sissy Spacek
The enlightenment ideal, is that everyone show think for themselves - George Monbiot

May I ask what gave rise to this thread and this quote? Do you see anyone "selling enlightenment" on RF? and what was Allan Watts doing thru' all the books and speeches?

I see people making lot of threads as poke reactions TO something they read somewhere else on RF, rather than any otherwise pure intention to create one, this is why I finally ask.

No, it wasn't in reaction to anything.

Here are a couple that appeal:

“Enlightenment is a destructive process. It has nothing to do with becoming better or being happier. Enlightenment is the crumbling away of untruth. It’s seeing through the facade of pretence. It’s the complete eradication of everything we imagined to be true.” - Adyashanti

"To know yourself as the Being underneath the thinker, the stillness underneath the mental noise, the love and joy underneath the pain, is freedom, salvation, enlightenment'" - Eckhart Tolle
