Hey just fancied a change from all the heavy conversations we usually have... who is your favourite guitarist of all time and why?

For me its Randy Rhodes because a) He does immense solos (crazy train, Breaking all the rules etc) b) Riffs!!!! Crazy Train sticks in my head, its such a heavy bugger of a riff!>! :)
c) He looks so bloody cool....

Peace x :):):)

Frank Zappa
Nobody has embraced the different genres of music. Jazz, classical, rock, instrumental Zappa has embraced them all with a very raw and distinguished style. Steve Vai, Zappa’s protégé, said it best when he referred to Frank Zappa’s solos as “air sculptures”. Never did Zappa play a guitar solo the same. Every time he played a song the solo was a spontaneous moment and a new experience. I also never encountered someone who has given music the respect it deserves. He took music very seriously by introducing humor to it.

Zappa was a god I must admit, but not my favourite. Hendrix had the gift of making things different, whatever he did was off the cuff and from the heart. When he heard Martin Luther had been shot he came on stage that night and said "This is for my friend", then he improvised on his own for 2 hours straight. Unfortunatly it wasnt recorded.... but all the people who were there confirmed it.

Hendrix was a very spiritualist guitarist that emphasized a more "bluesey" style. If given a proper life span, it would have been interesting to see how Hendrix's sound would have evolved over into the 70's and 80's. There is a certain credence I allow for improvisational guitarists. These are guitarists who display a "What The F-"attitude and just play. These individuals are tapping into something, whether they are “in the zone”, in touch with their muses or consulting the soul. They are easily recognizable. Last guitarist I heard like that was Vernon Reid of Living Color, these people are daring, wild and just off the cuff.

Wow there's a lot of great guitarists out there. Eric Clapton instantly comes to mind.

Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton
Jimmy Page
Pete Towensend
John Lennon
and Jack Johnson

why? All of them except Jack Johnson just made excellent music and it is still good today. I mean, how can you say none of them were good. :) Jack Johnson is good, he is today music but a lot of people haven't heard of him, yet he has GREAT guitar music.

Jimmy Page or Paul Simon. I can't decide.

Other than "the legends" I would say Adam Jones(Tool).

Jack Johnson, I have been a big fan of his for a while, but he is no guitarist, how can you put him next to those greats, and by the way lennon could play like 2 chords :s

Paul simon kicks butt. I start every practice with his version of "angie", and i've yet to tire of it. Definately an underrated guitar player. How come no-one ever brings up Robert Johnson?

Ty Tabor of King's X has an interesting style and distinct sound. I would like to know/own his set-up (right down to the guitar pick he uses). What is the final verdict with King's X? Not that it makes much difference but are they considered Christian Rock?

I love Robert Johnson. I've had "Hot Tamales" or...I can't remember if that is the name of the song or not...stuck in my head at work recently.

Simon is awesome.

What about Nick Drake?

Well, that's my opinion and you have yours. BTW, how can you say JJ isn't a guitarist? He plays the guitar in all his songs?!?

Yngwie Malmsteen
John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
Michael Romeo (Symphony X)
Michael Angelo Batio
Rob Doherty (Into Eternity)
Joe Satriani

So yeah, it's one of them, but I'm leaning towards Romeo, just because Symphony X>the others.

Meh, shredders.

My favorite above all others is Dimebag Darrel. My other favorites are Alexi Laiho, Kirk Hammet, and my favorite bass guitarist: Cliff Burton.

Alexi Laiho is not only a talented guitarrist, but he is also quite possibly one of the most attractive metalheads out there. <3

And Cliff Burton is my hero! I'm still working on his solo on "Orion", but my bass only has 20 frets, so it's tough. RIP Awesome dude.
