Anyone know of any in mythology or any books on them aside from Lilith? Also would love to see books both on demonolatry and standard mythology...im very curious. Most demons I hear about are often seen in male aspects tho some also have female aspects.
Hindu mythology mentions many demonesses, some good, some bad.
Hidimba, a demoness, married the strongest o the Pandava brothers, Bheem, and they had a son who was equally strong, Ghatotkach. Ghatotkach fought in the Mahabharata war on side of Pandavas and was killed.
Hidimba is worshiped as a Goddess in Manali, Himachal Pradesh.
Trijata, wa a demoness and was deputed to guard Mother Sita, w hen Ravana had kidnapped her. She was very sympathetic to Mother Sita, always encouraged her to bear the separation and said that Lord Ram will come to rescue her.
Ravana wife Mandodari, was a demoness, but she was very pious. She is remembered by Hindus
as one of the five most virtuous women.
However, Shoorpanakha (Ravana's sister and the one who had nails as large as a sieve) is not considered good. She went to Lord Rama and asked him to marry her. Lord Rama told that he was already married and satisfied with his wife (Mother Sita) and perhaps she could approach Laxman, his brother. Shoorpanakha then pestered Laxman for marriage so much so that Laxman cut her nose in anger. Shoorpanakha returned to Ravana and asked him to take revenge. The Rama-Ravana war was because of his incident.
