Enrico Fermi poised this paradox in regards to the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations: Given the high probability that life could exist elsewhere in the universe, where the heck are they and why haven't they been in contact with us?
So others both scientist and non-scientist have sought to resolve the paradox with various hypothesis. I will give you some examples:
1. There are no other extraterrestrial civilizations.
a. Either they never developed, therefore they can't contact us.
b Or they destroyed themselves or were destroyed in in a cataclysm.
2. They might exist but we are unable to discern any meaningful evidence of them.
a. The extraterrestrials are just to alien for us to discern.
b. They are not close enough to discern any evidence.
3. They are just too busy to bother contacting us.
4. They have chosen not to communicate for a variety of reasons.
a. Their code of ethics could make it so that the believe that any interference is wrong.
b. They could be in disagreement amongst each other as to whether they should communicate.
5. We are our living in an observational zoo and they just want to see how life on this planet is going to develop.
6. They have deliberately hidden themselves from us in order to observe us.
So where do the gods come in, well I think we can apply just about everyone of those hypothesis to the gods as to why we have no evidence for the gods. Maybe they don't exist, maybe they are too busy and too far away, maybe they just want to observe us and not interfere so they hide themselves from us. Or maybe they died or just left us.
