..but some clarification from Finn.
Finland got independence 1917
Civil war 1918-1919
Finland was at this point VERY poor country after hunders of years oppression first from Sweden, then Russia.
In November 1939 Russia attacked Finland without warning, this war - winterwar - ended March 1940. Russia planned to invade Finland in few weeks but it did not happen, instead we had winterwar-miracle. Even though finnish army did not have even proper uniforms, not to mention weapons Russia was only able to take Karelia(eastern part of Finland).
After the winterwar Russia threatened Finland and demanded more land, in deep fear Finland begged help from Europe and USA - no one helped, no one wanted to stand up against huge country like Russia ... except Germany. Mannerheim didn't want anything to do with Hitler but Germany was the only one willing to sell us weapons and train our soldiers.
25th of June 1941 Russian planes flew over Finland again and bombed our towns. War had started again.
Despite Hitler's demands Mannerheim refused to attack Leningrad.
Finland surrended 1944 and Karelia and some other areas were lost again(and to this day they are the only WWII -occupied areas that have not been returned).
After that Russia demanded that all German soldiers in Finland should be "exported". There were Germans in Northern Finland. So Finnish army was sent to Lapland and this war lasted winter1944-spring 1945. As germans withdrew they burned Northern Finland to the ground.
So our country was in piecesand Russia demanded 300 million American dollars as punishment for our "crimes". This was - believe it or not- a great thing for our country. 1945 Finland was one of the poorest countries in Europe - people suffered from hunger and died like flies. And we had to find new homes for war refugees from the lost eastern part of Finland.
Things did not look good.
But. We were forced to build up factories and find ways to get things going to pay the penalties. Goverment set up free healthcare system, especially pregnant mothers and children(mothers got paid if they went to check ups while pregnant)were taken good care. This system is still going on btw.
Every child gets paid over 100/month until they turn 17. And you can google "maternity package Finland" to see what new mothers get.
So because my grandparents were forced to make things happen from nothing, I live now in safe, pretty rich country.
I don't know though if Finns saved any lives though. Denmark was under Germany and same with Norway. I highly doubt that Russia would have ever dared to attack Sweden.
