First and Current Impressions

Inspired by @SalixIncendium's thread: What was your first impression of me, what is the current one, and how do the two compare?

I'm often quite interested in the finer details of interactions between people, so feel free to share your thoughts in detail if you want.

My first impression of you was that you were a bit dismissive of other's opinions.

My current impression is that you are usually less dismissive. Maybe even a bit esoteric - I'm using the face value definition of the term from the Oxford dictionary meaning:

"Intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest."

That being said, I'm probably one of the most snobbish judges of character on the forums, and I'm also pretty critical of myself, too. Having high standards has helped me when I applied it to myself, to try to improve through a slump, so I've come to rely on being a bit critical.

I think it took me a little longer to run into you on a regular basis, as I suspect the areas of the forums we frequented upon my forum joining differed. After seeing you around for awhile, I was blown away by your intelligence(and about toppled over when I learned English was not your first language). You stand for what you believe in, but generally try to remain composed while debating. I appreciate that.

You came across as more standoffish and professional in the beginning, but I have completely discarded any idea of 'harshness' coming from you, and now consider you one of the most gentlest and kind hearted members on the forums.

I was actually frightening of you when i first saw your name... Only a cutthroat debate slayer would call himself that.

Over the years I've come to see you as a thoughtful, sensitive and kind person.

My first impression of you was that you were a metalhead and very knowledgeable about some kind of academic subject, but I wasn’t sure what academic subject. The current impression is that you are a private person who types really quickly on the keyboard. I imagine that you are tall, have a shaven head, stubble on the face, and like wearing black t-shirts.

In some ways, I think I was up until a tad over two years ago. RF seems to me to be a sort of a living record of many posters' changes over the years, which I find to be one of the most interesting aspects of it.

I'm highly selective about who I get close to whether online or offline (for multiple reasons, including a necessity to be careful and to only fully trust the right people with specific things about me), and there are certain things I only share with close friends. I treasure close friendship, so anyone I know to that extent is going to see more of my personality and background than other people in my life.

No doubt the Dio avatar is the biggest sign of intelligence... and good taste! :p

I'm really glad we've gotten to know each other more since you joined. You add a lot to the forum's sense of community. :glomp:

I like your user name.

And I still like your user name.

@Debater Slayer

I was actually frightening of you when i first saw your name... Only a cutthroat debate slayer would call himself that.

The username has a bit of a random backstory. When I first joined, I picked two words that included "Debater" and rhymed with each other, so my username was "DebaterSlater." An admin (who is now retired) saw my username and suggested "Debater Slayer," with a space, as a more logical username. I liked it and have stuck with it since.

Over the years I've come to see you as a thoughtful, sensitive and kind person.

Thank you!

I do type fast (around 135-150 WPM), but I usually post from a phone. Did you guess the typing thing, or did you stumble upon my thread about a typing test from a while back? I'm curious how you guessed that. :D

I'd rather not describe my physical features or appearance in detail, but I will say that I indeed like wearing black on black!

I never pictured you typing on a phone for some reason. I pictured you using a grey laptop. Regarding your fast typing, I assumed you were a fast typer due to your coding.

No worries about the appearance.

Yeah, my preference for that style has nothing to do with my musical taste either.
I have days where my clothes suggest my musical preferences, and other days, not at all.

I remember sitting in the waiting room for my son's weekly therapy session. There was a couple who was in there the same time I was, and I'd grown fond of them, though we didn't talk outside of our waiting room visits. One week, the woman came up and complained to me about her husband(who was sitting on the other side of the room); she was upset with him because he was listening to metal with the kids in the car. Rather than sympathy, I told her, "well, you're about to not like me very much, but here's what Ares and I listened to on the way over" and pulled out a case full of CDs(yeah, I still use CDs). "Oh!" She didn't know what to say, but I got an enthusiastic "hell yeah!" out of him, and he creeped over to talk music with me.

I think I always had a grudging respect for you, even initially.

Now, I see an unusually thoughtful, young, non-female person who has some interesting things to say.
I do admit being a bit disappointed with your fascination for Marxism, but you are still young. :)
In a way, it sounds like you are an "eyes wide open" Marxist, instead of a run-of-the-mill ideologue.

Experience is the best vaccine for Marxism.

I'm taking my time with that mainly due to prioritizing other goals that should also make it easier for me to become a landlord. That one is more of a long-term goal, hopefully accompanied or followed by real-state trading at some point in the distant future.

I wouldn't be too eager to be a landlord. I'm a landlord for just one condo and it's a pain in the butt. In the past I was a manager for an L.A. apartment building (about 30 units) and that was similarly awful.

I've heard and read some horror stories about troublesome tenants who sometimes reach the point of being vandals. What worries me the most aside from vandalism is the possibility of having to evict someone, especially if they were a family. Whether I evicted any tenants or not, I don't think I would feel great after having to consider doing it in the first place.
