Yeah, that's a cultural thing. The dude's from Mexico, ain't he? It's kinda similar to Indian Hindus having a family deity or Goddess (Kula-Devi).

Mi amigos de Mexicanos!

I don't know I never asked. Makes sense. my wife and I still have a few crosses and even a nativity scene in our room. Niether of us are christian but they were gifts from family. So it is probably something similar.

No, what you have is totally different. Lady of Guadalupe, on the other hand, is like the Gujarati Umiya Mata (Goddess Umiya) for various Gujarati tribes. It's strictly a Mexicano thing.

EDIT: Unless the crosses and the nativity scene are strictly ethno-related, then it's not so different. The Lady of Guadalupe is like that dude's Kula Devi, if that makes sense.

No, I think i have an idea of what you mean. Again doesn't bother me, it didn't take away from anything.

It shouldn't bother you at all, IMHO. It doesn't bother me one bit either.

Lady of Guadalupe is pretty awesome. <---- Para mi amigos de Mexicanos!

It's nothing about "Christian influence infiltrating the Kali Mandir", it's nothing about proselytizing or anything like that. It's a "tribal" thingy. He's just giving reputation points for his Kula Devi. Furthermore, if you look at the picture carefully, he's practically breaking every Christian theological rule by using the figure as a Murti, especially with the bell sitting there and all that other "ritual" stuff. Don't worry, he's just being a good Hindu. :)

You don't need "de" (of), it sounds a bit wordy. It would work if you just said "mis amigos méxicanos" (or mis amigos mejicanos, or you could just say mis amigos de México). I took a Spanish class in college and it sucked, lol. My teacher was fat and used to always yell "traduce, por favor" whenever we didn't translate and stuff like that...

Oh I know I do not question him one bit. The conversation I had with him after everything let me know he for sure knew what he was talking about. I just know some people may not enjoy the idea.

I am considering maybe trying to go more than once a month. Only issue is it may require some crazy travel time. Like 4-6 hours on multiple buses, but the place just feels "right". Maybe just once a month now and when I can get a car I can drive down as much as I want

Yeah, don't rush it. Def. take your time, brother.

Yeah good idea. Once a month should work well enough until I can do more.

Because you're a Hindu. :) To a Hindu all temples 'feel' right. Once you get your car, I'd suggest you check out a few more. Some might even 'feel' better than this one too.

But this one felt right to me to, from the pictures, their website, and your story. There seemed to be some actual energy there, caused by the devotion of the devotees, and proper rituals.

there is a Lakshmi temple(with other deities because that's just how they are in the West) that is a bit closer. I could actually go to that one weekly. It's still a bit of a ride just not as much. I should go there too. I just worry a little because FH had some pretty scary stories of being split between two temples I don't want to find myself in a situation like that.

But I should go visit more anyways lol

Lots of people go to several temples. They do festivals all over. There is no 'loyalty' if you decide there is no 'loyalty'. God is all over. Besides, it was just a suggestion. Certain religions can enter any building of that faith, while other religions have more 'boundaries' set up. Hindus are of the former.

Don't let my experience scare you - my dilemma was entirely unique given I actually have a choice about where I go. I am also a recovering "people pleaser" which creates the illusion for me that I must be loyal to someone/something regardless of how irrational that in the context of Temple visits. So really, my dilemma was self-created;). Make whatever choice is most conducive to your worship. And don't feel like you have to go to a certain temple if it going to exhaust you to travel there. On the same token, don't just go to a temple because it's the closest one (although I admit for most people this is the only way to visit a temple, given how spread out they are.)

I encourage you to try visiting as many temples as you are able to. They are amazing to see, no matter how small, or how grand. Whenever I travel (be it for a wedding or a holiday) I always look to see where the temples are (if any) in the area and I try to swing by for a visit if I can. :)

Enjoy the visits and don't put too much pressure on yourself! That defeats the purpose!

I guess for me a big part of it is the social aspects. I know temple is not about socializing and making friends (not that it is explicity against it) but i am a pretty social person. Its one of the types os learner i am. I enjoy writing out my ideas on my own and then bringing my ideas forward to a small group for discussion. But hey what's wrong with meeting even more people? Besides I won't be carless always.

This for sure a problem of mine. I have just recently been able to finally visit a temple for the first time and I already want to do too much lol. Nithing wrong with wanting to improve but if my goals aren't managable i will get discouraged.

My Guru's Guru said, "No hurry, no worry." Good advice I think. Lots of wisdom in that. .... and in what FH just said. She is the only other person I know besides me that is like that.. constantly on the lookout for a new temple to go to.
