flat earth

I was thinking about something: regardless of if there are still any flat earthers around, doesn't denying a flat earth deny a literal understanding of the bible? So wouldn't that make conservative Christians self-deceitful? To deny that the earth is flat would be for them to deny the very basis of the hermeneutic. That's odd to me.

I respectfully ask you this, are you saying that every religious Christians should take everything in the scriptures literally? That's more odd to me....

Not at all. But to those who claim to, why don't they also take the bible's teaching on a flat earth literally. I know most Christians don't believe in a 100% literal understanding of the bible, matter of fact, the majority believe that most of the Old Testament is better understood as allegory and metaphor.

How can you explain to someone that the world is round???

If there so religious that they believe the earth is flat because the bible is inerrant

I never knew people held onto these beliefs in this modern age.

I dont think there is any use argueing with them, they are set in there belief.

they use these three experiments to base there belief.

3 Experiments You Can Do At Home that PROVE THE EARTH IS FLAT! - The Landover Baptist Church Forums

1) Jump!
Now, scientists claim that Earth is spherical and rotating at a speed of between 700-1000 miles per hour, depending on your latitude. This is a very high rate of speed. You can disprove this nonsense by simply jumping up as high as you can. Really, it's that simple. What happens when you jump? You come straight down to where you were. But, if the Earth were indeed spinning at such a fast speed, wouldn't you land hundreds of feet away?

If you were to stand in the flat bed of a truck going 75 mph, and jump straight up, what would happen? You wouldn't fall straight down. You would fall out of the truck. That's because trucks move, the Earth doesn't. This experiment proves the Earth is fixed in space and doesn't move.

2) Blow!
Since if the Earth is supposedly a sphere, it naturally comes to assume what would happen to people below the equator, like in Australia? Since they are underneath the sphere, wouldn't they fall off? This is where scientists come up with mumbo-jumbo like "gravity" and "centrifugal force" to explain away their theories. So, the scientists want you to think that because the earth is so much more massive than people or things, that people will naturally "stick" to the bottom of the earth because of gravity.

This can be disproved very simply. Get a balloon and inflate it as big as possible. It will be a spherical shape. Now, take a piece of paper and try to rip, tear, or cut the tiniest speck of paper possible. This paper represents a human being, much smaller in mass to the balloon, which represents the Earth. Now try and place the small piece of paper to the underside of the balloon. What happens? It falls off!

That's right. Even though the balloon is so much bigger in mass, it cannot hold the tiny paper. So if the Earth was a sphere, no one could live below the equator because they would fall off.

3) Get High!
Ok, this one you really can't do at home, but you can do it out in the world. Stand on the ground and look around you. What's the farthest you can see? Maybe it's a building, tree, or mountain. Now, find some place very close to it where you can get a much higher vantage point. (This also works if you're on a jet and about to take off.) Notice how in the higher place you can see much farther? You can see more of the world the higher you get. This shows the world is flat because the higher you go, the easier it is to see over obstacles. At the same time, it shows the world cannot be spherical. Because if the world was curved, the far distance would forever remain out of view because of the Earth's curvature. It would eternally be over the horizon.

If the Earth was a sphere, it would not matter how high you went, you would still see the same thing. Since this is not the case, the Earth is flat.

These experiments are all confirmed by creation scientists as being 100% accurate. If you're skeptical of the flat Earth, why don't you do these experiments so you can see truth with your own eyes.

I do not think this is something serious :p. If they are then they lack basic knowledge about physics.

Congratulations! You answered your own question. Ofcourse many parts of the scriptures are "figures of speech". If you're saying that the faithful should take everything literally (including the creation), then it's like saying that when Jesus said in Mark 16:17-18:17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakeswith their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”, then it's like saying that I (as a believer) 'could pick up snakes with my bare hands and could drink poison without dying'. See?

Those flat earthers remind me of this saying I picked up from somewhere from some source I don't know: "people who hate their beliefs being laughed at should not have such funny beliefs."

But there's a distinction between making fun (mocking) and finding humour. The best humour is found in truth.

But, if the Earth were indeed spinning at such a fast speed, wouldn't you land hundreds of feet away?

Imagine a person in the back of a car with no roof going 70 mph. This car is very large. If the person were to jump he would no land behind the car but in about the same place he jumped from. Same with the earth, we are also going extremely fast. If we were to jump, we are still whizzing forward along with the earth and will fall to about the same spot.

If you were to stand in the flat bed of a truck going 75 mph, and jump straight up, what would happen? You wouldn't fall straight down. You would fall out of the truck. That's because trucks move, the Earth doesn't. This experiment proves the Earth is fixed in space and doesn't move.

That's right. Even though the balloon is so much bigger in mass, it cannot hold the tiny paper. So if the Earth was a sphere, no one could live below the equator because they would fall off.

The reason a paper is not attached to the balloon is because the balloon nor the paper has a large enough mass. The balloon may be massive compared to the paper but that is not important. The balloon itself must have a very large mass.

Lets say I were an ant on this sphere. The higher above the sphere I am the more of it I can see. The biggest reason we on earth cannot see very much of it on the surface is because there are objects blocking our view and the range of our sight is limites, and the curvature of the earth. When we go higher we can see into those things hidden from our view. When we go really high we can see the whole earth and this proves that it is round.

I was just doing some research of when it was first widely accepted the earth was spherical. Well, it is a pretty common fallacy that Christopher Columbus and Magellen were the ones to shift the flat earth paradigm to the spherical earth paradigm and that is not true. It was widely accepted in the Middle Ages the earth was spherical and has been since ancient Greek times. Greek mathematicians even accurately measured the earth's circumference by measuring the length of shadows in Egypt from well up closer to the tropical latitudes at Syene where the sun was almost directly overhead at noon and at Alexandria it cast a shadow at noon which was about 240 BC. The spherical earth was even discussed as far back at least to Pythagoras about 600 BC.

Even if there was no evidence at the time of a spherical earth it could still be argued logically to overcome the paradox as to what was holding the earth up. Infinitely tall pillars will just fall over and turtles all the way down will have to stop somewhere. Now a good and effective way around that paradox is that everything falls not parallel but to a central point deep within the earth so the other side of a spherical earth counteracts the falling force (gravity) on this side. So some old anonymous philosopher could demonstrate this on a beach at low tide as he draws a circle on the sand and say, "this is the spherical earth and draw a series of arrows in a radial array around the outside of the circle and state "this is the direction objects fall" and say see what I mean the opposite side of the earth could be counteracting this side, what a neat way around such an age old paradox.

This has got to be a joke! Look at all the inuendo on the 4th & 5th post! And chceck out post 8 too. Mental

it was a joke

dan for reason gave the answers straight from that site.

St Giordano Bruno

the round earth became more popular by 330ad but it was not widespread at that time.

The OT would have been flat earthers while the NT would have been roundys lol
