Followers of non-violence. What should the focus be on at this time?

It's the same with alcohol..it's not the alcohol but the people who drink it that is the problem. You can be tough on gun laws but the inner violence is still there.

Then what needs to happen is to have the media give guns a negative image subliminally for one or two generations, and then ban guns. All you need to do to make that happen is oust the Republicans from power for long enough. Doesn't seem likely though. :p

You could start by banning Republicans.

Ignoring legal obstacles, we could likely cut down on violence by:
- Banning alcohol
- Banning violent entertainment (video games, movies)
- Solitary confinement for all prisoners
- Longer prison sentences for violent offenders

I'm not saying it's worth it, but I'd expect a drop in violence.

I disagree with this. Of all the countries in the world, the USA has the single highest gun mortality rate, and that's probably because it's relatively easier to get a gun. Think about it, if the US took on the gun policies of places like the UK and Australia, then less people would have guns (meaning that less criminals would have guns too). I don't think people are getting shot by what we'd class as criminals, but instead, I think it's more likely that people are getting shot other ordinary people with guns... who then BECOME criminals. IMO, this needs to stop. The easiest way to do it would be by making guns illegal.

Whether or not the USA is a more violent country then the UK or Australia, I am not sure. There is more to consider then death by gunshot (there also more to consider about those deaths) but that is a tangled mess I don't care to spend my time on.

However, I don't care how other countries do it. I live in America Land of the Free and that means something to me; I am not going to force my views on others.

"but I'd expect a drop in violence."

Or produce a drastic increase as revolution sweeps the land.

So you are suggesting that we suppress freedom of press and, using propaganda, manipulate the media in order to further your views?

There's so much violence going on - where to start?
What should be the focus at this time?

Thy focus should be oneself. The world is a collection of individuals, if you fix yourself then your helping humanity. Start on yourself.

Media/Popular Culture.
Gangsta Rap, Violent Video Games, Violent DVDs/Movies, Violent TV.

Adolescents have come to think being an adult/man means beating someone up, stealing thier car, having sex, drinking/taking drugs.

Two nights ago I sat down with one of the adolescent males I work with (Ward of State) to offer him some form of 'Rite of Passage' exercise/activity funded by the agency I work for- A two week camping trip perhaps...or a six day hike...or any difficult activity that he would find significant as marking entry to the adult world.

His first option?....To complete 'Grand Theft Auto', get drunk and "f%$# s#!t up".

What the culture models...they seek to emulate.

I guess I'm speaking more of those that would claim non-violence, ideologically, yet still do things like hit their spouse or kids. I don't know how many this applies to, but I've seen enough ideological hypocrisy in this regard to indicate that it's not rare.
I thought about this, too. I believe in non-violence. And I've tried to live that way.

I think in order to bring about true non-violence there must be people focusing on all forms of violence, including abortion and violence against non-humans.

Jesus taught-- Keep on seeking first the kingdom and his( Jehovah) righteousness, and all will be added.
