Forgivness

Spirit of Light

Be who ever you want
but let's say you are first in line to offer forgiveness
the harm dealt.....and you desire no harm in return

does your leniency embolden the wicked?

do you remain the target?

No the way i see it one does not remain the target. Because when you forgive, no matter what they may do to you in future you can still forgive and not give revenge back toward them.

I was buddlied every day at school for 12 years. i never did harm back to them, because i knew it would then never stop. when the bullying did stop i did actually tell each of the guys who had bullied me that i forgave them for what they did to me.
I know not everyone can do it the way i did. But i just say it is possible.

I grew up in a bad neighborhood
If you have seen a movie called Fight Club.....yeah....
it happens

where I come from....a total stranger might shove a fist in your eye
as if to knock you down doing so.....
no words
no gain to be had
no anything

more than once......I look the guy in the face and wait
just to see if he is stupid enough to try that again

a dangerous practice........to offer the other cheek

if he was willing to shut your eye.....bruise your cheek
he might be willing to kick your *** altogether

not a practice for the frail of frame

and the word meek is then shown for it's true meaning

Spirit of Light

Be who ever you want
Honestly i can not say what you should do in that situation you describe, But personally i see two options i might choose. walk away before something more happens, and if possible move to an other area where it is less extreme to live. But i know moving is not always an option.

allow me to further explain....

when you walk a neighborhood as I did.....alone...
you have to make a judgment call with each confrontation

sure....I often walked away....having offered the other cheek
but that is not forgiveness

and on occasion where retreat turned into a chase....
I would down the guy that caught me

word got around.....you can chase the little guy if you want to
but don't catch him

and forgiveness is lost in all of this
it has no place among those who live to do harm

Forgiving does not necessarily mean you have to forget. You may reach under a log and have a snake bite you. You can forgive the snake but that doesn't mean you have to reach under the log again.

Heh.

My grandmother put it in a different way....same message, though. She told me that if you stand in front of a bulldozer and get run over, then you need to forgive the bulldozer (or the operator of it, anyway). But you do NOT have to go back and stand in front of it again.

The idea, according to her, was that NOT forgiving someone who had done you wrong was just adding to the damage and taking 'life space' away from the good stuff. Forgive, then forget and go have joy.

What is your view of forgivness?

Can you forgive anyone who do you wrong?
If not, why?

An English translation of the Gospel - Matthew 21 Then Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?”

22 “No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven!

23 “Therefore, the Kingdom of Heaven can be compared to a king who decided to bring his accounts up to date with servants who had borrowed money from him. 24 In the process, one of his debtors was brought in who owed him millions of dollars. 25 He couldn’t pay, so his master ordered that he be sold—along with his wife, his children, and everything he owned—to pay the debt.

26 “But the man fell down before his master and begged him, ‘Please, be patient with me, and I will pay it all.’ 27 Then his master was filled with pity for him, and he released him and forgave his debt.

28 “But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who owed him a few thousand dollars. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment.

29 “His fellow servant fell down before him and begged for a little more time. ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it,’ he pleaded. 30 But his creditor wouldn’t wait. He had the man arrested and put in prison until the debt could be paid in full.

31 “When some of the other servants saw this, they were very upset. They went to the king and told him everything that had happened.32 Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said, ‘You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me. 33 Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?’ 34 Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt.

35 “That’s what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.”

Well first, forgiving someone, isn't the problem, The problem is, when you forgive someone, But they keep repeating what their doing towards you.

One person keeps forgiving and the other person keeps hitting.
So now what?

It Aint Necessarily So

What is your view of forgivness?

For starters, exactly what are we talking about here? Is it enough to simply disengage from the offender's life without seeking revenge or carrying a grudge? Does that count as forgiveness?

Or does forgiveness entail more, such as behaving as if nothing has happened, and continuing the relationship as before?

If I do the latter, it is because I have an incentive to preserve the relationship.

Always seemed a waste of my energy to hold a grudge. However I usually consider a few different was to go about not being wronged again.

If they hurt me once, yeah ok, maybe I was a little ignorant. If they hurt me twice, maybe I'm a little stupid.

The OP was meant as can you forgive in any given situation (i think the discussion went a bit off, but that is ok)

Forgive them at least 490 times ;). The thing is, if they ask forgiveness then forgive. If they don't ask, then that's their own problem.

If I may ask, how did you come by that of Matthew 21.
Because it sure doesn't match up to Matthew 21, that I have

Matthew 21:20-30
And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!
21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?

24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.

25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?

26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.

27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

28 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.

29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.

30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.
