Fraternities are roiling cauldrons of abuse, immaturity, senselessness,
recklessness, outrageousness & tribalism. Their exploits are unleashed
upon all things, so I wouldn't read too much into an incident of mocking
sacred memorials.

Back in my school days, I recall one day seeing the front yard of a particular fraternity with hundreds of plastic forks (tines up) embedded into the ground. One of the sororities did it.

I've heard of similar pranks. I was living next door to a frat house, and we had a sign out front supporting the Democratic candidate for mayor - and they destroyed the sign. I was pissed. I got into a heated argument with them. I was a lot meaner than you've ever seen me here. I think they thought I was some sort crazed psycho with a few loose screws, so they never bothered me again. Plus, we always had a crew of lowlifes over on any given night. I hung out with a rough crowd back in those days.

To me, I thought they crossed the line. Pranks are one thing, when it's fraternity vs. fraternity. But when it goes outside of that realm, then it goes too far.

Sadly, in our disrespectful culture of today, all kinds of signs and memorials are defaced and vandalized.

Many, as I do, see the removal of historical statues as the purest form of vandalism. History is just history, and attempting to rewrite it by removing the bumps, scars and idiocy of it denies history.

As to these frat people, they are disrespectful idiots. However, as history shows, in America you have the right to be an idiot.

It bothers me whenever I see this kind of vandalism. I recall visiting the Washington Monument many years ago, and the stairway to the top was closed because there had been too much vandalism of the markers along the steps.

As for the removal of historical statues, if it's done legally and with all due process, then it wouldn't necessarily qualify as vandalism. I'll admit I have somewhat mixed feelings about it myself - and I can understand the removal of some statues in some communities. I would leave that up to the local populace to decide what statues are appropriate and which are not.

Since you're from AZ, you may be aware that we have a statue of Pancho Villa here in downtown Tucson. It was a gift from the President of Mexico in 1981. Some conservative groups have fought to try to have it removed, but thus far their efforts have failed.

And while I agree that everyone has a right to be an idiot, they don't have the right to vandalize or destroy public property.

When I visited the JFK memorial in Dallas there were all sorts of vandalism, the worst I saw beside the graffiti was the human excrement that was purposely piled on the epitaph. I went there to pay by respect but left disgusted, I returned one week later because my trip was ending to see the memorial again and sure enough no one bothered to clean it up and there was even more excrement on the epitaph.

Well, old Pancho killed Americans in his invasion.

I see vandalism out in the desert to old buildings, even graves .

Just think of all that tuition money their parents wasted so these boys could party on a huge campus. And then pose for a picture that should embarrass even their dead ancestors.

That kind of thing doesn't even prevent you from getting into politics. Just the stupidity of youth. Doubly so, since they captured it for posterity and then presented it to the world.
