Fresh outcry over Italian mayor's allegedly sexist comments

I couldn't understand the video, but I did read the translation of a portion of the article:

(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 22 - A fresh sexism row has engulfed Terni's outspoken conservative Mayor Stefano Bandecchi after the Umbrian town's first citizen said that "a normal man looks at a woman's nice *** and perhaps tries it on, and then if he succeeds, well and good, or if he doesn't he goes home".

Bandecchi, 62, was answering a question from a rightwing Brothers of Italy (FdI) councillor, Cinzia Fabrizi, after she criticised a November statement by the Popular Alternative (AP) party member in which he said "anyone who has never two-timed his girlfriend isn't normal".

Bandecchi responded to the latest storm by saying that all "normal" Italian men and women had understood him but the country was "full of imbeciles".

Bandecchi rose from a humble background to become a self-made billionaire who founded the private Niccolò Cusano University and take over local Serie B soccer club Ternana. (ANSA).

He said "anyone who has never two-timed his girlfriend isn't normal." He said that "normal" Italian men and women understood him. I'm not sure what "normal" means anymore, but he does seem rather crude and ill-mannered.

And I thought British politics was a cesspit. Disgraceful language and appalling attitude. These catholics eh?

That's a good point.

Nobody is questioning the vulgar language and the manners: the outcry was over the sexism of his comments.
That is, that he considers that a male in order to be normal, is supposed to stare at beautiful women's bottom, and to hit on them.
He pointed out: if the girl says "no thank you", then the man will return home alone.

It was a way to strengthen the concept "no means no"....but he was pointing out that hitting on beautiful girls is what makes men real men, I guess.

(We have talked about it in another thread about this vision of virility and manhood in Italy) ;)

I would grant that it is considered biologically "normal" (though I'm not too fond of that word) for a typical male to be sexually attracted to a typical female. However, the processes involved in acting on that attraction seem more dependent on culture than anything else. "Hitting on them" seems more of a recent phenomenon, not necessarily indicative of how things were conducted 100-200 years ago (or further back). In fact, one can even find laws on the books which prohibited men from engaging in certain behaviors if they saw a woman walking down the street.

Likewise, fathers were typically very protective of their daughters and insisted on meeting and vetting any potential suitors, before they would allow any man to see their daughter.

I don't understand why you guys think that Catholilandia is the land of the chaste ones. Or the modest ones.
Well, you know that reference to slags by a church representaive. So just hypocrites then.

Nothing to do with chastity or modesty. It's 2024. It's chauvism, sexism, double standards. Belongs in the dustbin of history.

In my opinion the article didn't translate the speech that well.
I need to translate the exact words to make people understand why he was deemed as vulgar and sexist.

Italian men have understood me. At least, the normal ones have. The mentally sound ones. And all the normal women have understood me. It is true that Italy is full of imbeciles, so some can have trouble understanding my words. That I claim one by one. A normal man stares at a woman's nice *ss and maybe he will hit on her. If he succeeds, he will s*rew her too. If he doesn't, he will return home alone. Be offended as much as you want, but that's my opinion (idea).

Have you ever watched the movie Malena?
It's all about men catcalling her and drooling over her , and the women blaming her for being provocative.
That was Sicily in the forties.
Not certainly Texas, 1900s.

He sounds juvenile....not in a good way.
He reminds me of Trump.
Have you made arrangements for him to move to Italy yet?

I found it interesting that he was being criticized for his remarks by a right-wing politician, according to the article.

What he's talking about is easy to understand. Most people understand basic concepts like the birds and the bees. So, I don't think the issue is that people don't understand what he's talking about. It seems more likely that people are criticizing him for a lack of decorum, which he doesn't seem to understand.

Sexism, chauvinism, misogyny...not welcome in British society. Tory politicians, unsurprisingly, tend to be the ones exhibiting such outdated attitudes, both locally...

- 'Sexist, chauvinistic tool': Tory council boss suspended over treatment of women during ceremony

...and nationally...

- MP Lee Anderson ‘will not be missed’ after leaving equalities committee

I have not seen it, although out of curiosity, I read the plot outline in the Wiki article for the movie: Malèna (film) - Wikipedia

Seems kind of sad, in a way. The outline describes a scene where she had her head shaved. That reminded me of stories about women in France who were accused of sleeping with the Nazis. After the liberation, they were not treated very kindly.

I'll see how this goes in any future relationship I have.

I suspect I'd be called a lot of nasty names and dumped if I cheated.

Because that is what a sensible person does with creeps like this.

Nazis were in Sicily just for two months. In August the Americans had occupied all of Sicily.

Well... in my humble opinion he said pretty acceptable things.
The problem is that he used vulgar words. He could have said it without being vulgar.

He sounds like a sex-fixated boor with no sense of or respect for personal boundaries.

There's no way to rationalize cheating like he did without being vulgar, because the viewpoint itself is inherently vulgar. Changing the wording would merely be sugarcoating and shallow cosmetics.

Exactly.
In central Italy they are so "crass", you know, much more than Sicilians.
He could have used a polite language, and the contempt would have been more about alleged sexism.

I was curious about the city of Terni, which this guy is the mayor of: Terni - Wikipedia

The city was bombed heavily during WW2, as it was an industrial center.

Also, it's the birthplace of St. Valentine, whose holiday is coming up soon. So, the mayor of the city of St. Valentine's birth turns out to be a lech.

I did meet Ternans. They are the most romantic people in the world.
Monica Bellucci is from Perugia, which is in the same region.
