From 1947 to 2023: Retracing the complex, tragic Israeli-Palestinian conflict

In case anyone cares to look, I found this article introduces the major events from 1947 to now very well. Its focus is limited by not covering Israeli settlement policy, various attacks by Israelis and Palestinians, dividing the West Bank into administrative zones, various terrorist attacks , the negative role of Iran etc. If nothing else it puts the current horror show into historical context. A few excerpts from:

From 1947 to 2023: Retracing the complex, tragic Israeli-Palestinian conflict

1947: Thousands of European Jewish emigrants, many of them Holocaust survivors, board a ship – which came to be called Exodus 1947 – bound for then British-controlled Palestine. Heading for the “promised land”, they are intercepted by British naval ships and sent back to Europe.

1948-49: On May 14, David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first prime minister, publicly reads the Proclamation of Independence. The declaration, which would go into effect the next day, comes a day ahead of the expiration of the British Mandate on Palestine. The Jewish state takes control of 77 percent of the territory of Mandate Palestine, according to the UN.

For Palestinians, this date marks the “Nakba”, the catastrophe that heralds their subsequent displacement and dispossession.

"many of them Holocaust survivors"

In Leviticus 25:10 there is a missing letter waw (ו), which has a value of 6 in שוב (return) . This was interpreted to mean that the people would return without six million.

וקדשתם את שנת החמשים שנה וקראתם דרור בארץ לכל ישביה יובל הוא תהיה לכם ושבתם איש אל אחזתו ואיש אל משפחתו תשבו

And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout [all] the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.
Leviticus 25:10

It is even more complex than that and goes back to WW 1
And there is more to it than that

I thought it was complex until someone here simplified it for me by telling me Israelis drove Palestinian families out of their homes in the West Bank. By no means does that justify what Hamas is doing but now I understand the tension.

I think it's a difficult thing since the whole history of Israel has questionable justifications itself. The media has been very focused on the attack and the current situation, and from what I gather is because it is a serious humanitarian issue. The history, and who is right and who is wrong is a bit irrelevant until the current situation is resolved. If we dig into the weeds there is blame on both sides, and the news becomes mired in huge shrug. I suspect it is easier to remain focused on the single story of Hamas attacking Israel and taking hostages, and an invasion seeming to be inevitable.

I was watching FOX News (just out of curiosity) and the pundit accused the "left" of growing anti-Semitism, and showed a clip of Andrea Mitchell asking an Israeli woman whose son is missing about her feelings about what happening in Gaza, with many missile strikes and supplies being cut off. The woman was angry with the question, and she was not sympathetic to what happens to the people of Gaza. I found nothing anti-Semitic about the question, and Mitchell is an experienced journalist. I found that distasteful of FOX and it reinforces why I don't watch it. The other media outlets I have been watching, CNN, pBS Newshour, MSNBC, and some podcasts, have been professional and focused.

The reason I opened this thread is that the current Israel-Hamas war won't end the problem even if Hamas is totally destroyed. What should be done would to me start with what Menachem Begin said in 1978: The most misunderstood verse in the Hebrew Bible is "You shall love your fellow as yourself.” (Leviticus 19:18)

Begin told the world that the Jewish people considers it amongst the greatest of mitzvot to make of a “ra” ( an “evil” person – an enemy) into a “rea” (“a fellow” – a friend).

It is hard hard and again hard to get out of the endless cycle of hatred and fear but eventually the only way out is to carefully and slowly start walking that path.

An concise and courageous Haaretz Editorial appeared a few days ago which begins:
The disaster that befell Israel on the holiday of Simchat Torah is the clear responsibility of one person: Benjamin Netanyahu. The prime minister, who has prided himself on his vast political experience and irreplaceable wisdom in security matters, completely failed to identify the dangers he was consciously leading Israel into when establishing a government of annexation and dispossession, when appointing Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir to key positions, while embracing a foreign policy that openly ignored the existence and rights of Palestinians.

Meanwhile, from the Jerusalem Post

Historically that is what happened several times when the Israeli government was taken by surprise. And this unfolding horror show is worse than any of the preceding ones.

Were they? Mosad is arguably the best intelligence agency in the world. What is more likely, that they dropped the ball or that the government "let it happen on purpose"?
(Yes, I know, its conspiracy theory again but in cases of low information and unexplained events my mind goes there. At least I'm aware of it.)

For it to be a conspiracy they would have to think that they were doing the wrong thing.

Where there is a perceived existential threat there's also a big argument of necessity.

History is full of surprise attacks including 9/11. I'm sure there will be an inquiry but I would guess that Israel put too much faith in technical measures and spying including their wall. Time will tell.

Here are some excerpts from the timeline you posted relating to why there is not peace between Israel and Palestine today:
1993: After months of frenetic secret negotiations, Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin sign the Oslo Accords. The accords see the creation of the Palestinian Authority, which gets administrative control of the West Bank and Gaza. On September 13 on the White House lawn, Arafat and Rabin exchange a historic handshake in the presence of US President Bill Clinton. The event is watched by over 400 million TV viewers across the world.

The Oslo accords agree to 1967 borders. Yitzhak Rabin sends Yasser Arafat a letter acknowledging the existence of Palestine and Yasser Arafat sends Yitzhak Rabin a letter acknowledging the existence of Israel.

1995: On November 4, Rabin is assassinated by a Jewish right-wing extremist at a peace rally in Tel Aviv.
This successful assassination comes after three failed assassination attempts that same year. The reason for the assassination was Yitzhak Rabin's commitment to peace between Israel and Palestine.

1996: Benjamin Netanyahu is elected prime minister for the first time.
Benjamin Netanyahu announces that he will "reinterpret" the Oslo accords to prevent the agreed return to 1967 borders.
