Games of old that you think have aged well.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Ah, so marmite game = niche game. gotcha. :)

Have you played any of the Dungeon Keeper games? They were made by the same (now defunct) studio that made Populous. They're still a blast to play to this day.

I never played Dungeon Keeper but I did see an interview/doc of the studio which showcased the series. :)

Speaking of good studios that have gone. I really do miss Barking Dog Studios, the makers of the PC's Homeworld. That game absolutely took my breath away by the music, immersing storyline, and the graphical vastness of empty free roaming space. I sticky-tagged along with the resource collectors journeying towards meteors and asteroids or with a lone cruiser or corvette on exploration/patrol miles from the mother-ship whenever I'm between battles, or when the other ships could automatically handle the Taiidan at the time. For some reason I liked it when the security of the fleet disappeared from view. All alone like Kirk or Picard and the ships crew.....

You should try the free trail of Eve Online. It's an mmo very similar to that. I recently started playing.

Some of the physical classics like Chess, Scrabble, some card games, etc.

For video games:
-Many of the notable side-scrollers, including Mario, Sonic, and Donkeykong, among others.
-The first Super Smash Bros.
-Many of the Zelda games
-Some of the Final Fantasy games

Mathematician

Reason, and reason again
Chess and checkers. Chess because unlike Backgammon the game can be devilishly complex and mentally taxing but it's not hard to comprehend the basic concepts. Learning where each piece can move is easily accomplishable. Backgammon involves just as much strategy but has too many limiting rules to be as fun.

Chess because it mimics the strategy portion of chess but severs it down for kids and those wanting quick fun.

Monopoly, I feel, is a terrible game whose only significance is it is historical role as being a satire on American capitalism. It's boring. If you want a game you can spend a day on Risk is the way to go.

Video games? Almost all of the classic names like Pacman, Tetris, Mario, Donkey Kong.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
Love me some:

Jacks

This game originated in the ancient world, so I'd say it's enjoyed some staying power!

Dominoes:

Dominoes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The oldest domino sets date back to the 1100s.

Being a Texan, I have a particular fondness for "42."

"A popular domino game in Texas is 42. The game is similar to the card game spades. It is played with four players paired into teams. Each player draws seven dominoes, and the dominoes are played into tricks. Each trick counts as 1 point, and any domino with a multiple of 5 dots counts toward the total of the hand. 35 points of "five count" + 7 tricks = 42 points, hence the name."

My favorite game though is "Boggle." It's my favorite because I am currently undefeated. However, the downside to that is that now no one else in my circle of family or friends will play with me anymore!

I have to admit though -my oldest daughter and my dad both really give me a run for the money...

One final game - though I am not a big fan of going to the casino, I have to admit that there is one game there that I enjoy, and that's craps.

Though the odds are ALWAYS in favor of the house, you can definitely strategize and have a decent chance of coming home with a pocket full of money. That is, as long as you don't take advantage of all the free drinks...

And there's nothing quite like standing around a craps table when the table is hot and everyone is yelling and throwing their chips in. It's great fun - as long as you're only using expendable income!
