He might not have opted to materialize as a gay man, but he'd almost certainly have associated openly with gay folks, thus drawing the ire of the religious establishment.
Or of part of it, anyway.
Sorry. It's often difficult to view the more tolerant members of Christendom as part of "The Establishment."
