Gender Roles

Do you believe there should be strict gender roles in daily settings? If so, why? And what are they?
Hey! Who let a woman express an opinion on the internet!

Seriously, I don't think we should do anything to enforce gender roles but equally we need to recognise that some will naturally develop to a point. Men and woman are different in all sorts of ways though there are significant overlaps in pretty much all of them. For example, men are, on average, stronger than women but the strongest woman will still be stronger than most men and a selection of reasonably strong people will naturally include some women. So, in a role that requires strength, even with true equal opportunities on gender grounds applied, some women would suit the role but a greater proportion of men would overall.

Because of this, many roles will never naturally see true mathematical equality and pushing too hard to achieve that is going to do more harm than good. It's almost discrimination in the opposite direction where (usually) women are expected to want and be able to fulfill traditionally male roles and it's considered a failure on their part as much as anyone else's when they don't.

No. No strict gender roles. Its better that we assume the roles we fit rather then try and fit the roles we are supposed to have. Some people, including myself, would just feel constrained by strict gender roles.

I've read that in nearly every culture known of, women usually have the task of food preparation and distribution. I say, "usually", because there are male chefs in some cultures. But they are vastly outnumbered by the number of women in the same cultures who are primarily responsible for food preparation and distribution in their own families.
Have you seen how the typical guy cooks? I've known many that would simply starve to death if they didn't have a woman there to make them food that isn't burnt to a crisp on the outside and still mooing on the inside.

And I know many people who would rather have their father cook for them than their mother

I've no interest in cooking, but when necessary I can turn hamburger into an
overcooked hockey puck. (That's how I like'm.....thoroughly dead & dry.)

Lol, you reminded me of one guys attempt at pancakes (I wasnt there, heard it from someone who was). You know how you put butter or something in first, before you put the pancake stuff in, so it wont "burn stuck" (or whatever I should say in english)? He did it the other way around. Didnt work out that well for some reason .

EDIT:

At least thats if I remember correctly. Not sure, was long ago I heard about it so my memory might be wrong. Should probably point out that my father is a rather good cook, though. Myself... I am not good. But I am not that bad either, just too impatient to learn cooking correctly.

Like if a Ship is sinking, who should be given more preference for the last remaining lifeboat seat, a 30 yr old Mother or 30 yr old Father.

Not sure why age should be relevant. It would be up to them to decide I guess.

Exactly. In the family of one of my cousins, the man does the cooking and teaches the children after coming home from his job. My cousin's husband is wonderful:hearts:!

Like we've touched on in a number of our conversations, I think most of human culture and behavior is rooted in biology and evolution, and the general separation of tasks and roles along gender lines seems a clear example of this.

Edit: Cooking is an interesting example, as it is true that most food preparation in most societies is primarily done by women, although, in most societies, the most well-known and respected chefs tend to be men. Of course, the role of paid chef is an altogether different role category than cooking for one's family. This example does seem to offer interesting avenues to explore regarding gender roles and perception though.

It's one of life's finer pleasures if you ask me.
