George H. W. Bush's Comments Towards Atheists

Former President George H. W. Bush said the following words.

"I don't know that atheists should be regarded as citizens, nor should they be regarded as patriotic. This is one nation under God."

How do you feel about these words?

Well, I am not American, but if I were, I think I would be furious, and make sure that Bush senior would be made aware of my opinion, as a theist.:149:

How I feel about those words is not really an acceptable sentiment in polite society :).

Interesting tactic on getting more of the votes. Make the group who is generally opposed to you, unable to vote.

Reminds me of Thatcher's attempts to prevent poor people from voting lol.

Hi Fluffy,

From where did you learn that ? I must admit that I was totally unaware....:)
Well.... it was from my parents who aren't exactly the most unbiased of sources when it comes to Thatcher. It was something like if you were unable to pay a certain tax on your house, which Thatcher increased dramatically, then you weren't allowed to vote. I'll try and remember to ask them tomorrow and PM you with the details.

Furious is right! Where did you find this quote? If it is true, then ignorance is more prevalent in the upper class than the poor (which I've always believed anyways). I truly don't believe this quote is accurate (I'll be shocked if it is). Why not just replace 'atheist' with muslim, jew, or buddist (sp?)?

As far as patriotic goes, WHO WOULD WANT TO BE!? Patriotism is one of the greatest follies of men. Love thy country/government, regardless of beliefs or else be ostricized!? They can keep patriotism ALL to themselves.

One nation under God. Here's the kicker. Here's where things get dangerous. Statements like this lead us right back to the anti-humanism/dogma argument. All someone in power has to do is make a demand, any demand, and follow it up with "One nation under God" and the hoards of Christians will follow. End of story.

So what? It is his opinion. While I think it is a poor choice of somethign to say, especially in public, but he is welcome to his opinion no matter how silly I think it is.

I will hold my opinion of these words until I see proof that they were actualluy made. I find it hard to believe that any government official, let alone the President, would make such comments and I would not see them all over the news.

During the Cold War, the communist adversaries of the United States were officially "atheists" ("Godless Communists (http://www3.niu.edu/univ_press/books/257-5.htm)") which tended to reinforce the view that atheists were unreliable and unpatriotic (an example of the fallacy known as affirming the consequent). In the 1988 U.S. presidential campaign, Republican presidential candidate George H. W. Bush said, "I don't know that atheists should be regarded as citizens, nor should they be regarded as patriotic. This is one nation under God." [5] (http://www.robsherman.com/information/liberalnews/2002/0303.htm)

Yeah, so what? I mean, what if the president publicly admonished all religions other than Christianity? I mean, it's only his silly ole opinion.

Man! And that wasn't very long ago. Thank you for the enlightenment.

It was while he was a vice president.

Oh, your talking about Daddy Bush!! Okay, I thought you meant the current president and I thought you meant recently. Well, I don't doubt that he said that. I hold the same opinion then as I do now. The guy is a freak and can't keep his ridiculous opinions to himself.

The only thing I'm curious about is why wasn't he impeached or whatever it is called for a vice-president? Must have had a lot of supporters at the time who thought the very same way. I also wonder what would happen if a public official made a derogatory comment about Christianity. I'll leave that idea up to everyones imaginations.

Mass rioting? Oh...even worse...the Jehova's Witnesses would be out in full force knocking on your door trying to getting people to convert.
