"German conservatives call for partial ban on face veil"

"BERLIN (Reuters) German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives have agreed that women should be banned from wearing the face veil in schools and universities and while driving, Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said on Friday (Aug. 19).

The move follows an influx last year of more than 1 million, mainly Muslim, refugees from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, and growing security fears among the public after two Islamist attacks and a shooting rampage by a mentally unstable teenager.

“We all reject the full veil — not only the burqa but also other types of full veil that only leave the eyes visible … It has no place in our society,” de Maiziere told reporters.

“Baring one’s face is essential for our communication, co-existence and social cohesion and that’s why we’re asking everyone to show their faces. We want to introduce a law to make people show their faces and that means that those who breach that law will have to feel the consequences.”

The conservative interior ministers want to ensure women show their face while driving, when they register with authorities, at passport controls and at demonstrations. They also want civil servants, teachers, students at schools and universities, judges and witnesses in court to be banned from wearing the full veil.

What do you think; essential requirement or unfair religious discrimination?

In the Tessin the banning of Burka a.o. is Law since Juli. It works good...

I think it is a good way, we have the "Vermummungsverbot" The Forbidding to cover the Face at Demonstrations and at Public Places since years, But until now it is not used for Muslim Women with Burka etc. It is time to use the existing Law for all people like in Tessin......

Essential requirement. Women dressed up like the phantom at the Opera have no place in a secular society with basic cultural customs. Independently from how sensible those customs are. Secularism does not entail accepting being dressed up like Batman, just because my belief says so.

If they do not agree, they are not forced to stay in Germany. I am sure their doctor did not tell them they have to stay in Germany, at any cost. If my religion dictates that I run naked in the streets, I would not live in München or Paris.

It is as simple as that.

I'm inclined to go along with this. I know that in some Muslim countries women must follow religious dress codes regardless of their religious belief. Not that this lends reason to Germany's law, but it does show that the knife can cut both ways. Feel you absolutely must wear a burqa or niqab, then don't go to Germany.

'While all versions of Islam suggest a woman should dress modestly, often covering her hair and body, Saudi Arabia is one of the only Muslim-majority countries that legally imposes a dress code (Iran is another). Women, foreign and local, must wear an abaya (a few get away with long coats) in public places."

The abaya

Want to go to Saudi Arabia then be prepared to wear an abaya.
