Getting old is a privilege

Still, some little kids mistook me for the school custodian.
You're doing well then.

Well, I'm in my mid 50s, and I've remained pretty healthy throughout my life. I'm rarely sick, and I've never had any serious conditions or illnesses.

I've been injured a few times; got knocked on the head more than once. Every time I tell someone about my head injuries, they always say "Oh, that explains a lot."

I don't really think about it that much, though. I've known people who might fall into the category of "health nut." They go to the health food store, they shun McDonald's and other fast food, they're constantly talking about it. They're obsessed with being healthy, yet I've noticed that they're typically more sick on average than your typical chain-smoking, junk food eater.
Usually those who philosophize about growing old, aren´t old.

They tell us how to deal with the pain many old timers experience, without having experienced it themselves.

As one who is old, going on 71, and one who experiences extreme pain from a couple of very serious spinal conditions, I just smile at the philosophy.

We all walk our own path, and there are no blanket rules that apply.

We must relate as individuals to what life brings us, and we must find our own coping mechanisms.

I know guys older than me who can hike for miles, I can go about a half mile before the pain overwhelms me.

Losing what once was, to age, is like a watching super slow motion train wreck, you know how it ends, but getting there is awful to watch.

Aging with a lot of pain is like a serious loss in your life, you grieve, but then you must make terms with it and find ways to enjoy life.

My favorite piece of prose, "Desiderata¨ sums it up beautifully, ¨ take kindly the counsel of the years. "

Just how is loss of hair or getting wrinkles suffering?

Our scientists in Switzerland have found something that definitely stops men’s hair fall. It is not yet out, but I checked, and they could have really found something.

Too late for me.

Too bad. It looks like something that we still want to keep, despite having lost most of it during our evolutionary path (mainly because of the evolution of sweat, which exchanges heat better with no hair in the way).

Anyway, I like balding men. They look more intelligent and masculine, somehow. My husband started losing his hair when he was very young.

If you want to be a wise and graceful, self-centered, beloved one, you must begin by correctly understanding why aging occurs and understanding the value of being human.
You should perceive aging not as corrupt, decay or old, but as maturation and wisdom.

You should remember the preventive health measures and remember that preventing diseases is much easier and cheaper than treating them.
I have been taught all my life that being self-centred is something to avoid like the plague.

And I'm still waiting for you to try to sell us some kind of snake oil health supplement.....:D

I distinguish between what's controllable and what isn't. Arthritic pain, disease ... outside my control. But having some emotional reaction to losing hair as one ages is just silly. Find something real to cry about.

But yes, for very immature surface people I suppose it's 'painful'.

There is an appointed time for everything.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: There is an occasion for everything, and a time for every activity under heaven: Everything on earth has its own time and its own season.

I am more self centered now.. and oddly enough my children encourage me. I never was before.. always deferring my needs or wants.. putting parents, children and family first... and I was not unhappy doing that..

Its just different now.. and my job now is to take care of me.

You are right ! We don´t just look that way, we are more intelligent and masculine.

All that extra testosterone that causes baldness really amps us up !

As someone in my mid-70's, all should pay heed to my wisdom as disbursed on this forum.
When drunk, or sober ?

I find that after a few beers I become very wise, but the next day I don´t remember what I said, and my wife just laughs when I ask her to repeat it.

My stomach has told me in no uncertain terms that I should not put alcohol in it or I'll suffer the consequences. My wisdom is that I listen to it.

Not being a work to rule or class conscious guy helped. Best friends were the secretaries, aides, and custodians. Teachers were often pompous asses with their high-falutin' degrees and fancy terminology. To quote Shania Twain ... "You don't impress me much."

Vanity is on their side. I'd like something that would stop it growing. Those poor suckers who have to shave every day.

Maybe. Maybe not. If someone wants to cry over spilled milk (going bald) when they're over 50, fine I guess.

I'll never know the joy of having long hair and doing the head bob at an AC/DC concert.

Y'know, I've had two bald winters, and right now I am shedding like a St. Bernard, leaving big bald patches where they aimed the radiation at me two weeks ago. Good thing I have long, thick hair on top, so I can do a comb over. I'm seventy. Not being bald is much better.

Trust me, getting old sucks. It does, however, beat the only alternative.

.....but nobody will believe that I'm 21 on THIS side of my face!

How about juice plus ?

My sister in law sells that stuff, and the entire family has told her to shut up about it around the family.

She has been fully indoctrinated into a health cult.

One of our Doxies is diabetic, and the sister in law tells my wife to stop giving her her insulin injections, and give her juice plus instead, she will be cured.

She is full goose bozo crazy. They really believe this stuff.

Forgive me, I have led a sheltered life: what is juice plus?
