Getting some sleep.

My new job got me used to staying up till 8 in the morning very easily. Not a problem, except I'm laid off, and can't sleep until very late, thus am tired throughout the day, and sleep through decent hours to look for a job.
Can anyone give any advice on falling asleep, besides counting sheep or taking sleep aids? I'm running out of my strong alcoholic (almost pure alcohol) beverages that for some reason help me sleep. Not pass out, but go into a deep sleep.
Or would anyone know if a doctor would prescribe a sleep aid to help readjust ones sleep cycle due to a life style change?

Be careful with the alcohol. Next thing you get addicted. Try some warm milk. I have heard that eucalyptus oil on the pillow helps. If you are trying to sleep during the day, try to block out as much light as possible. The light is what will make you want to wake. Cover up the windows with a thick blanket or something to make it seem like night time. I saw that on TV the other day.

I'm trying to not sleep as much during the day. Didn't do too bad today, got up just before 2pm, but I'm tired enough to easily lie back down and sleep a few more hours.

It might just take time to readjust your cycle, get up a little earlier and go to bed a little earlier. Or you could take melatonin, that's what Guitar's Cry does when he needs to re-regulate his sleep cycle.

I can relate somewhat ~ my job requires that I'm up and working until 3-4am most days, yet some weeks are 'odd' in that I have the option to go to bed around 11pm...but by then, I'm so used to going to bed late, I can't get to sleep earlier than 3/4am anyway!

I usually find that becoming physically tired helps. Working out/excersise might make it easier for you to initially fall asleep. Other than that, Gentoo's suggestion sounds beneficial (getting up earlier even though you're tired will help in the end, because you should be tired enough to sleep at a 'regular' time after a few days/week of doing that).

My sleep is all messed up. My problem is less with me and more with Jamie. I had him on a decent schedule, but this past month that has gone out the window. He just won't go to sleep until anywhere between 11pm and 2am. Which is why I'm up now posting this. Last night I got to bed at 2am, woke up at 3 due to baby upset, woke up at 4:30 due to Turk getting up for work, fell back to sleep around 5 or so, woke up at 7:30 due to a cat scratching and rattling my bedroom door, and eventually got to sleep until 11am. I'd kill for a solid night's sleep at regular hours!
