Give me money

Alright why do churches feel its necessary to preach AT LENGTH about giving money. We all know that pastors, ministers, etc. live off of what the church gets from the people, and they also help the less fortunate, so why not have your ushers by the doors with their baskets?? I sat in church and listened to this pastor preach for 15 min. about how to be a "cheerful" giver. He used the example of a little girl who had a dollar and a quarter in her pocket, the pastor said , God wants cheerful givers, so she asks her mom, and her mom let her decide. Well, she said I will be more cheerful if I keep my dollar and give my quarter. Then he says, "We dont' want you to do that" ugggg.... seems like such a twisting of God's word. I got from that, if you're not cheerful in giving then don't give at all.
Did people give Jesus money in God's name?? Did he ask for it, or did people just give without him having to qoute his father on why they needed to?:angel2:

Greetings!

>Give me money.

Not all churches are like that!

And i particular, the Baha'i Faith REFUSES all contributions except from formally-enrolled members!

And members' contributions are both strictly voluntary and strictly confidential! The only person who knows who gives is the Treasurer, and that only to write a receipt for tax purposes. (If a member doesn't want the tax deduction, s/he need not even give a name other than to demonstrate membership.)

And no collection plate is ever passed at meetings, even among the Baha'is themselves.

Works for us!

Best, :)

Where is it written that you have to worship at a church? If you have faith than why not worship at home or in a park enjoying god's beauty?

They need the money so they can live better than their flock.

Well how insulting is that little jab? We went through this before here on RF. Please tell me how I am "living better than my flock?" Go ahead. I'm waiting. Really.

I don't know how it is where you are but here in the NW churches are bigger than the schools. More elaborate than the mansions. Clergy that drive fancy cars and live in huge houses.

You may be an exception to the rule. I don't know that for sure.

i have to say that a coworker of my husband said the pastor at his church lives BIG. huge house nice car, none of which he pays for, and he also gets a nice salary. I know there are a lot of them like that out there, I am just wondering if I shouldn't challenge the pastor on this. It has happened in both wed and sunday services now, and honestly i dont' want to sit in church being heckled like I am at a car dealership, thanks
can anyone tell me if Jesus asked for money, these pastors sure do reference the bible a lot!! I feel they take scripture out of context to push people to give.

There are bound to be some that abuse the system, whatever the system may be, but there are even more that don't abuse it. To insinuate that all do, just shows the level of understanding I see here.

The level as i understand it here is that all those that question the faith is worng no matter what their view.

I don't insinuate i will come right out and say it.

Again, not all see the questioning of faith as wrong. I find it essential, for example.

Not to be harsh, but could we skip the generalizations and broad unsupported accusations? They don't serve to help anyones arguments.

:clap Frubals for a most excellent point!

Our minister drives a 1988 Toyota Corolla with somewhere over 250k miles. He's not sure because the odometer quit working a while aga. Most clergy I've met drive modest cars and live in modest houses as they seek to be good stewards and set the right example for their congregations.

Presenting a few extreme examples as the norm is intellectually dishonest and wholly unfair to the many honest people who do not abuse their flock.

thanks all, but really, does anyone know the bible well enough to tell where and when Jesus says give money. I mean i have heard it all in the church i have attented a few times, but find it hard to believe He was talking about money. Also, since i find it bothersome does anyone have good advice on choosing a church? thanks

Which churches are you talking about? Mine certainly does not pay any of leaders. We are known as lay preisthood (non-paid). Are you talking about Christinaity as a whole or just a few select ones?

Theres no where that i have found in the new testermint that says you have to give your money to god. All that i have really found is in Mathew 22 v 21(a little out of context i think) in regards to giving money to god, but it says give to gods what is god so if god wants you to give money then give it.

From my study the early catholic church brought in the whole give your money to god because they needed/wanted it. I hardly give money to the church i attend but when i do its beacuse the church is struggling with money. I dont like churches who say you have to give for i find it wrong.
