Giving Blood

Do any of you give blood?
The "blood bus" is here at our school today and I was the first to give blood and then I was the student representative that helped the team out today...It was (is) so fun! It is such a good thing to do and so unselfish!

I'm not old enough to give blood, but I did have to get some drawn on Monday for testing. The tech was talking to me about how much blood you donate (about a pint). I had to draw about 9 individual tests which was 1/90 of a pint, so mine was nothing even though the needle was in for about 2 minutes. The tech also said that when you donate blood it's good, for the person receiving it, and you because your body makes brand new red blood cells that are even stronger than the older ones you got taken out. It's a win-win!

I tried to give blood last year, but had a panic attack. :( I have a phobia of needles, and felt very bad for not being able to give blood.

Whenever the "blood bus" (as you called it) stopped at my highschool, and throughout college when I was there, I was never allowed to give blood because for some reason, they always decided to have a blood drive within a month or so of me getting a new tattoo.

I tried to give blood once. I was really excited about it and wanted to do it. I ended up with a huge bruise on my arm and they still couldn't get any blood out. Found out I have very small veins which are hard to poke.

I'm the same way. I hate needles.

I would give blood, but I'm afraid it wouldn't do the person receiving it much good, as my blood doesn't clot.

Hee, I wish it was only a case of nervousness or wimping out. :p I have full-blown panic attacks if I get near needles, though. They have to drug me up in so many ways to get a needle near me...

Yes.

However for a funny story (and one that will likely be seized on by opponents of transfusion if they decide to post on the thread), I gave blood first in high school. Well, after a bit, I got a letter in the mail: I had the AIDS virus it said! Now that would be amazing, because I've never done needles, had sex, had surgery only once, etc. I couldn't conceive of how I would get it.

Well, I wrote a letter in response, and waited...and waited...and waited. One day, I got a phone call and was told it was all a sad mix-up, but "my" offending blood had been destroyed, and when they discovered the mix-up so had the other sample.

It blew my mind lol. It's quite scary to hear you have AIDS, even when you know it's a mistake.

AHHH, that would be so scary! I think that my dad had a similar experience with Hepititis or something. Wow...

Don't feel that way; my wife tried to give blood, and promptly passed out. They won't have any of mine - not good enough...snif snif; they say there's not much of it left in the alcohol & medication stream.
That's given me an idea, perhaps I could draw it out myself, distill it ..... um:jiggy:

I bet he was unnerved by it.

On my experience, it's funny in hindsight :D. I've given blood several times, and I've not had that happen again. It's just plain funny now. Nobody was hurt, either.
